That is what i have, and i have read that basically carbon sucks, except when you wish to get rid of meds.

I keep hearing about sponges, can someone give me a link to what a sponge setup looks like, because i'm terribly confused about it, and im getting money soon, so i want to change out the carbon for a sponge system.

Carbon doesn't suck since it doesn't harm the water. It actually cleans the water by absorbing all kinds of organics, odors, colors, and harmful toxins from the water. Anyway you can easily fit a sponge into that filter to grow the bacteria. Any LFS will have replacement sponges that you can cut up to fit your particular filter.

my tank is already cycled so like, should i stick a sponge in there along with the carbon thing?

How would i know when i could remove the carbon thing, without killing off all my good bacteria.

Yes cut up a piece of sponge and put it on the return flow side of the carbon (the side where the water falls into the tank). Leave it like that for a couple of weeks then remove/replaced the carbon. When using certain medications you may need to remove the carbon.

If you have a planted tank, I suggest not using a carbon filter unless (as PaPeRo suggests) you want to remove meds after a course of treatment.

If not, leave it in and keep your LFS happy with regualar payments for the most expensive carbon on the planet (apart from diamonds).

Running carbon for removing meds is fine, other than that you are spending money to replace something you can do without. It has been implicated in hith in some studies.

If carbon was as bad as some people claim, salt water aquariusts wouldn't be using RO water which also uses carbon.

I'll go look into sponges like tomorrow or something.

Does it say like filtration sponge or something?

I'm totally lost on this filtration thing. I know i got carbon, and it will eventually put all the crap it absorbed back into the water (if i read correctly).

thats the same filter im running im my fry tanks. it should have a sponge with it. and the carbon comes already in the filter floss cartrages. just open it up and dump it out.

It only dumps the stuff back if you leave it in longer than you're supposed to. Anyway do what fishdawg mentioned, make a cut near the top of the carbon/floss cartridge and dump the carbon out.

remove the tab and unfold plastic and dump carbon out.

Ah makes a whole lot of sense now. The sponge is already included in the filter and the carbon pouch doesn't need cutting since it has a clip.
