Q For Wilder Pls Read

personally I try to avoid replying in a post in the emergancy section if wilder has
already answered it, usually with a link somewhere else for the relevant info.
that dosn't mean to say i don't know the answer just that she normerly gets there first.

Wilder seems to know a lot about diseases which, for her sake, may not be a good thing, especially if it was learned from experience. I am totally illiterate about diseases as I have been extremely lucky and only experienced some constipation problems with a couple corys.

Sadly it is not from experience, but from google searches, hence why we have fish being diagnosed with "skinny disease" or whirling disease, despite whirling disease being a parasitic afflicition which only targets members of the Family Salmonid.

well any of you feeling upset about not being asked for your help in the emergencies section. i've a post about HITH and I'm struggling for advice, so please have a look and help me out!

Wilder gives a lot of her time and energy to help out others on this forum. No one person can know everything so so what if she uses google sometimes. Lets not turn this thread into bashing any one member, to my mind anyone who gives up they're time to help others when they're in a stress about they're fish is good to me.

i have heard garlic is good as a preventative measure to keep your fish healthy, should get it in with your fish food, not entirely sure how though!

i was told one clove garlic for every 10 gallons.....mashed put juice of it in the water if possible if not just chop it finely so fish will eat it though some may not eat it but there is garlic in the fish food normaly so they should eat it fine.. thats was wht i ve been told

The garlic origins appear to be explained in the link below:

My biggest problem with the use of garlic is the mythology that has developed regarding it. This all began quite simply and innocently. Kelly Jedlicki was studying the use of garlic as an intestinal dewormer. For those who don't know who Kelly is, she is affectionately referred to as the "Puffer Queen" as they are her favorite fishes and oftentimes are brought into the trade polluted with various worms. As I said, she was examining the effectiveness of garlic against nematodes and cestodes on impacted puffers when she noticed a general decrease in Cryptocaryon irritans incidence. Later on, she proposed feeding garlic to fish as a preventative for Cryptocaryon irritans. From there the legend of garlic has spread. Feeding garlic to fish is now an accepted cure for Marine Ich by some individuals.

Due to the above, and the observations that many marine fish respond well to garlic in their food, it seems that garlic has become a panacea to all fishkeeping ailments to some people.

mmm it was recommended to me by one of the marine bods so that would make sense, I'll admit I've always been sceptical, thought of it as in the same league as salt. While it can be useful in certain circumstances it's a bit old wives taley and you'd probably struggle to find much evidence that's not anecdotal about it's effects.

awesome i will do that then its not expensive and i use it im my cooking some of the time thanks for the link

Good luck roseykat5.
