To some people it might not really be a big deal but to those that have read about Ty and how he hates strangers coming in to the house then they might understand.

At about 2.00am this morning some people broke into the garage, my partner woke up and got my dad up. They both went downstairs, I heard the front door open and Ty must have gone flying out as I heard him snarling and barking, I just sat on my bed waiting to hear either Ty howling or any other sound (I'm a worrier), a few minutes passed and things settled down, Ty was let out in the back garden and my dad went about securing the garage again. My partner eventually comes back to bed and said they got away on bikes.

The reason I'm so proud of Ty is because he only gave chase to the end of the drive and just stayed there barking and growling and standing his ground, instead of cowering behind my dad which is what he normally does when a stranger comes round along with sounding agressive to warn off the strangers from coming in.

Sorry if it doesnt make much sense but I'm still half asleep.

I think thats what my old Jack Russell Wilf would have done, just licked them to death or he'd have legged it up the street. I just cant believe that Ty actually stayed within our drive and did what he was supposed to do.

you should be proud, he's protected his own, without going over the top. he really sounds like a lovely dog (i know from his pics he's gorgeous)

That's great news Natsuko. I read your previous thread about the trouble you were having with him and it sounds like all your hard work with him is finally starting to pay off. You should be very proud of yourself and Ty! :D

Yeah he is a stunning dog, just wish he'd get over his fear of strangers but that take time which I'm prepared to give, plus he'll have no choice but to get used to it soon as there will be plenty of visitors about once the baby arrives. My mum's worried about how he'll be but I dont think he'll be too bad as long as he still gets lots of attention, but I'm prepared to put the work in especially as he's proved to be such a loyal dog and done what a good guard dog should.

I was so scared of if he'd got hold of the burglar that either he'd get hurt or they'd sue and have us get him put down for being a dangerous dog which he isnt.

Yeah, that's always a worry. I heard about someone who had a German Shepherd dog that she used to shut in the kitchen at night. A burglar broke in through the kitchen and obviously, the dog went for him. It went to court and she ended up having her dog put on the dangerous dogs act and he has to be muzzled every time he goes out. Stupid British laws that protect the criminals. The dog was only doing what all loyal dogs do. It's not as if it attacked him on the street without provocation. Makes me mad.

Keep up the good work with him. Patience is the key. Like you say, as long as he gets lots of attention when the baby arrives I'm sure he will soon be ok with strangers. :D

We read a case where a dog was put down because it barked at passers by from behind it's own garden fence and the people said "they felt threatened" - wth? what is wrong with people, dogs are suppose to guard their homes, much the same as people do. A dog barking from behind a fence is a threat to what? noise pollution perhaps?

Dogs get such a bad deal, I hate the law in that respect, but then again, burglars have sued homeowners for being injured while breaking in, one bloke fell through the skylight and sued the owner because they did not have a fragile roof sign. Get off their roof if you don't want to get hurt.

Incidentally, I would be madly proud of Sasha if she had stopped at the property line, she'd be kicking a$$ and taking names if someone broke in here, we rarely shut the windows in summer when we go out, no one in their right mind would come into her house on their own.

Thats brilliant news Natsuko. It's amazing when your pets step up and show you how much you mean to them by protecting you.

Back in SA we had all those big dogs, 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks and a German Shepard. The first male Ridgeback we had, had problems with his foot. It was deformed at birth and he had many operations to repair the foot, which just never happened. Our vet had looked after all of Alex's pets his whole life, so he was really good, but Spikeys foot was really bad. Anyway, I was very pregnant with our eldest and hanging up washing one day. We lived on a 7 acre plot with huge rocks at the top looking like a mountain, and a mini Acacia forest one the one side in the front. I never heard the guy who came up behind me. I was very paranoid anyway, and even had pepper spray in my hand. Out of no where, Spike came screaming and was totally vicious. I got such a fright but when I turned to see what he was barking at, was even more shocked there was some strange man behind me. This guy practically wet himself and made up some story of looking for work. Spikey wasn't like a normal dog. With his foot he didn't run around like the rest and by this point had sever hip displacement. But that morning he was the most vicious dog I'd ever seen. He was a pretty big Ridgeback and because of his efforts, we never saw this guy again. Unfortunately, Spikey was put to sleep a few weeks later, as his hips deteriorated rapidly and the vet said surgery wouldn't really help, as he refused to use the leg and his hips were some of the worst he'd seen. I had never cried so much for an animal.

Months later, just 5 weeks before I had our baby, Spikeys sister Venus had a little boy puppy. Our neighbours had a male Ridgeback and got Venus knocked up. She only had one though, and he was just as protective as his uncle Spikey. We were robbed of nearly everything we owned while our first born was in hospital having major surgery and our dogs were attacked protecting our property. We stepped up security and they came back when I was pregnant with our second son. The dogs knew who they were and alerted me immediately. The robbers nearly died when they saw me and heard my threats. Police, security companies and everyone I knew were phoned and we never saw them again. But had my dogs not alerted me, who knows how far it would have gone.

And to see how protective our dogs were over our son was amazing. They never questioned who he was when we brought him home. We introduced him slowly and with him being in hospital for a few weeks having surgery I worried he wouldn't smell the same as us. But they loved him and my female rigdeback followed me around everywhere when I had him with me. She was a bit mad with the licking  as was our Shepard.

Sorry to bore you to tears here.

Give him a big hug from me, he is amazing.

:D

Wow Alex I cant believe you had to go through all that, wow your dogs sounded great, I love Ridgeback's they are gorgeous dogs.

Suzie: I think it sucks that someone would get a dog put down just for barking, if our neighbours did that I would kick off as the kids next door were always tormenting Ty and he would bark at them when they were out and once even jumped into their garden when they were out. Luckily he didnt do anything but it scared them half to death and since then they seem to have stopped tormenting. We've now got the fence so that he cant get over. The laws here definately suck everything is for the criminal instead of the victim. I dread to think what Ty would be like if someone actually broke into the house, my old Jack Russell would have licked them to death or killed them with his bad breath, Ty would probably make a lot of noise and if me or my dad were about cower behind us.

I found out the other day that the woman across the road had seen the kids that had broken in too, they'd gone up and down the street making a noise to see if anybody would come out. Also found out that Ty actually nearly got hold of one and was only a couple of inches away from the guys foot before they got out of the drive. I still dread to think of what would have happened to Ty if he'd have got them as they could have been armed with anything. Luckily though I dont have to think about it as nothing happened to him and they only took a £3 pair of bolt cutters. Garage is now alarmed so that will wake us up in future.
