Well I have some coral fossils in my freshwater tank. I have 2 brain coral fossils in my tank. I found them at the beach about 6 years ago. They look really nice in a freshwater tank. I have a freshwater tank that looks like a saltwater tank. I use coral fossils I search for in the beach and but them in the tank. But lately have found no coral fossils in the beach recently. But I am going on vacation in August so I might have luck finding some more coral fossils. I also have coralife 50/50 fluorescent bulbs in my tank so it can have the magnetic spectrum of a saltwater tank as well. I hope your successful in starting a prehistoric tank.
I do not know if you can start a saltwater prehistoric tank but a freshwater prehistoric tank is possible.
