About the self-priming: If you remove the intake pipe before lowering the tank water (during a water change), the filter will remain full of water, and will self-prime upon restarting just fine...

Apologies if someone already mentioned this. Another factor I think is the beneficial bacteria can only survive a certain time on low, or no, available oxygen? Not sure? And if so, how much of a die off in transit? This is a big industry, reminds me a bit of gyms that sell all these different supplements, and exploiting an eager market. Same with weight loss items. I saw in my LFS they were selling dry leaves for £5 each. Quite small ones. Don't get me wrong. If I have my credit card on me and feel I need something, I am usually the first person in line to get ripped off. Especially if I am starting a new setup.
