Your best bet is to fishless cycle w/ammonia then. You have a good starting bed of bacteria already, it shouldn't take very long.

Today I bought the decor - java fern on wood, lava rock, bogwood and slate made into caves. I also went back to the fish shop and asked about the puffers and found out they're still only taking live river shrimp, so I'm going to have to practise waving dead things around on a bit of string.

question: what happens if the fish ingests the string?
