I was at Walmart, and I just had to look at the bettas...their cups were pretty clean, no bettas dead, some with spilt tails, but no fin rot. I saw this poor guy. He was a brillant red, just like my red boy Ruby. He was laying on the bottom of his cup, I thought he was dead at first. I picked up his cup and he went CRAZY! He was wiggling is butt like crazy and I swear he smiled. It was the saddest thing I have ever saw. I can't stop crying. This poor defenless fish will probably rot away in his cup...I'm hoping, dear god, that he gets a home. I wanted to take him home, and all the others, so badly. My mom wouldn't hear one word of it. This boy had hope. I really really hope that the lady with the 15 gallon long will let me buy it for $50...but she hasn't emailed me back. I think she's ignoring me. If this stupid ignorant lady would let me buy the tank she has being trying to sell for over a year I could save this guy and few others! She thinks that $50 for a 15 gallon (just the tank...not anything else!) is way too low! It just gets me so mad. I would be the one getting ripped off! Sorry for my pointless little rant, its just been bottling up inside me and I had to say something.

$50 for a 15 long is not too cheap. Tell her I said so. I would go get the boy for you, but I am on the other side of the country. Not that I have any room or anything. Sorry you had to leave him at the store.

Ditto.
I have had to leave them behind before and it's heartbreaking, especially since you have visions of some idiot taking them home and not taking good care of them.

BUT... i have resorted to thinking (at least making myself think) that someone will end up taking him home - and he MIGHT just get picked up by someone as caring as you are.

I do know how you feel, though.
:/

Another thing that got me peed off was that they ALWAYS have their female bettas in with the mollies! And the mollies are beating the crap out of them! Most of them don't even have any fins   Why can't they just have them in seperate cups like the males or in tank with more peaceful fish?!?!? I should leave a note by the fishtanks or something telling them to take them outta there.

They have the females in separate cups at our WMs. But they always look so incredibly unhappy. It's just so sad.

I always feel sorry for bettas who end up at WalMart. :(

hi i keep 3 female bettas with mollies in a 3ft tank thats all thats in there and lots of plants my bettas are all in fine condition and i breed from them and they eat normaly am i wrong to keep them together or is this a case of ones own experiance?

I suppose it depends on the fish, but, after finding my female Betta in a corner of the tank with a Molly picking mercilessly at her, I'm never combining the two species again.

maybe im just lucky :D but i will def look out for this now i never new mollies could be so nasty!

yes i am watching over my cleo cause im experimenting with species mix ^_^ my mollies dont even know she is there cause its so planted!

$50 for a 15 gallon long is far more than what you would pay at a LFS. When I'm buying a used tank I won't pay more than 75 cents per gallon. Perhaps it's a little more as you are in Canada, but I can't imagine it would be that much more. I think I'd tell her that she could keep her tank, and start looking elsewhere. I've found many REALLY good deals in the newpaper. You could also try garage/yard sales, and some LFS even sell used set ups. I have no doubt you can find a better deal. Best of luck !

Yeah, even at the lfs I go to that has to charge more to cover overhead has 20g for like 30$. Stuff her and buy new if you can't find one in the paper.

It really depends what you are getting with the tank when you buy new here. I paid $18 for my 5G brand new. But that was JUST the 5G. No lid, no light no nothing. I paid $75 for my 10G new with a hood and light, nothing else. I paid $199 for my 55G with everything brand new. All those are Canadian prices. 2.5G minibows go for about $30-40. I agree you could probably find a tank for cheaper. I was going to suggest you check the Buy and Sell online, but wouldn't you know that Ontario is one of the only provinces with no Buy and Sell. Check the classifieds, you could find a good deal. A friend of mine got her 90G from the Buy and Sell for $300, with everything including fish and a Fluval filter. It's starting to be garage sale season too, so you could check out garage sales.

Yah I guess I'll have to look somewhere else. Would a 20 gallon be ok? I think it would be a little too deep though.

EDIT:
OH YAH I FORGOT TO TELL YOU GUYS SOME GOOD NEWS :D :D :D
My very good friend has wanted to keep bettas like I do for quite some time now, and I told her about the red guy at Walmart and she's gonna get him! Well actually I'm going to get him and keep him for about a week because at the moment she doesn't have enough money and enough time to get down there and get him. And if he's not there then I'm getting a different one for her. I can't wait :D

EDIT: One question...can you just pick up the bettas cup and take it to the till? Or do I have to track down somebody who works in the pet department for hours so they can put that little sticker on the cup?

Anybody? Sorry, I'm just bumping my post up to the top so it doesn't get missed. :)

Heck, you could slowly stand in the fish department and dump the water out of every single container, one right after the other, and leave the fish in the cup to dry up - and no one would usually notice, no matter where you are.

Whisk those babies up to the counter and off you go.
