Hi,

In my old aquarium (this is like 8-10 years ago) i used to buy a pleco and drop it into my aquarium, without a second thought (and yes the temp thing awell) and he'd done perfectly fine, never really lost one before.

But now in my new aquarium I bought a pleco as well as a few other tropicals and it looked ok, untill 2 days later when i found him dead floating at the top of the water. I took him out and with a water sample went back to the petshop.

THe guy tested my water and said that I had either high ammonia lvl or high nitrite lvl (dont really remember which) anyway he told me it was proberbly because my filter had yet to mature, but by looking at the results of the water it should be fine to put another in, and gave me a replacement free of charge.

the second pleco was doing really well 2 weeks on and it still hadnt died, and worked a treat on the algea around my tank, esp loved a slice of cucumber.
anyhow, a few days later one of my friends need me to look after a few of his fishes while he gets a new tank, i accpeted, 2 days later pleco didnt look too good and found him dead the next morning.

Why are all these pleco's dying?

My friends fishes are now gone, i've done a tank clean and used a 3rd of the old water and its now been a few weeks since.

I've tested my water and these are the results:-

PH 8.0
GH 15
KH 15
NO2 0.3
co2 4.2

and at the mo the water temp is currently 79F.
I was wondering if it would be ok now to get another pleco as well as a few other fishes e.g. clown loach, that pigme catfish thing (bronze catfish I think it was called).

Or should i leave it for another few weeks?

You're PH and GH/KH are way to high for a Pl*co IMHO.
Basically Pl*co’s like slightly soft water and you have very hard water.

What sort of filter system are you using in the tank?
It could just be a case of changing you’re filter media for a different type..

Common ways to Lower Ph and hardness.

Filtering water over peat
Add bogwood to the tank
Inject carbon dioxide CO2
Use a commercial acid buffer
Water changes with softened water or RO (Reverse Osmosis) water

A good start would to be to test the water from you’re tap(could be the problem).

my fish cud of been the reason ur second pleco died. soz

dont worry i will buy bog wood and chop abit for u, also a replcement pleco from me is in order...

Enlighten me please. You sold the pl*co’s on to this person? :/

forget what minh said, or says in the future...

his that "friend" of mine that needed me to look after some of his fishes for him

anyhow, a few days later one of my friends need me to look after a few of his fishes while he gets a new tank, i accpeted, 2 days later pleco didnt look too good and found him dead the next morning.
