looks like a common or a gibby (cant really tell from the piccy)
It'll get big - too big for the tank I'm afraid....

I had a feeling you'd say that. I'm going to try and get a better photo tonight. I am calling my LFS tomorrow anyway to see if theres anything they can do.
Wish me luck :good:

UPDATE:
I've asked my sister if he can stay in her tank, but she has problems of her own, so can't accomodate him. So I'm still going ahead with phoning the LFS tomorrow

I'd post on tropical chat to enquire about the use of bacinetts, i've never heard of them, i'm not suggesting they don't work, but i don't know, neither do you, so check!! Mark... down boy
If you need any info on fish in cycling i'm happy to help, just ask...
Although the best thing to do would be to ask an LFS to hold him, a bit of pressure can get you everywhere..... Or just accept the loss, give him to the LFS for nothing and buy the fish you want when the tank is cycled.
Whatever you do, get some seachem prime or a similar product tomorrow!!! Careful some don't do exactly what they say on the tin...
Good luck

I've just put a thread on it now in tropical chat to hear other peoples opinions on it if they have used it.
That was my plan tomorrow - To try and come up with a safe alternative for the pleco and have him saved for me/given to the LFS.
That way I can cycle my tank properly and no fish will be harmed. I was just thinking of what was best in my current situation,
but if the little pleco is ok tomorrow, their should be a good outcome to this :)

If they do hold the pleco for me, I will ensure I invest in a bigger tank in the future - As I don't believe in keeping a fish in a fish tank thats not suitable either :)

Oh and mark, I wouldn't intensionally put a fish in a tank through cycle. That was not my intension at all.
I'm all for fishless cycling like many others :good: I know you mean well by what you said about me putting it in there, but hope you realise it wasn't done purposely

I'll keep you all updated! Thanks for all your help! :good:

I might... just might be able to give you some mature filter media. I live in denham village which is 20 mins drive from you. (or 10 if your father is a maniac on the road) However, i might be going to hemmel hemstead on monday right opposite the bunsfield fuel depot that burned down, where we store a caravan... which did implode in the explosion! I will add some more media tomorrow to one of my tanks so i cover my own ass in terms of the biomedia, so if you decide you want it, then all good, if not then i dont mind either.

I have heard that plecs can survive a long time out of water, so its kind of cool to get this info backed up. I personally boil all of my bogwood just before adding it to my tanks to remove the tannis... good thing you didn't!

I've survived a mini-cycle before and had to change the water 3 times a day. The biggest problem i had was fluctuation in temperature when adding water, so when adding water, pour some boiling water into a bucket and mix the tap water with it to about the same temperature as the tank water.

its not ideal, but a common plec will survive almost without doubt in an uncycled tapwater tank. If you can rehome it in an established tank temporarily then great, but s/he should be ok as long as the water is treated at least with stress coat and dechlorinator.

Thanks Neo for offering to give me some mature filter media. I really appreciate your kindness :good:
I will let you know by tomorrow if I will need to take you up on the offer or not, I'll see what I can do today. Doing another water change soon
If you can't get the filter media(changes of circumstances etc) please don't worry. It was nice enough of you to offer :)

Ok I have some good news, My partners mums friend, has a 4ft tank that has matured for 2 + years, so the pleco is going in there. I couldn't move him earlier as he was away on holiday, but he came back yesterday, and he agreed to have him either just until my tank cycles, or on a long term basis if I can't get a bigger tank to accomodate him!
Thanks for the advice :good:
Heres a picture of the little fella:

and a few more! :)
What do you think he is? I have had suggestions he is a common or sailfin. What do you think??
