One of our members 'Coldcazzie' has started a thread in the hardware section regarding actual flow rates of external filters. It would be great if all of those with external filters took part.

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/370607-external-filter-tests/

^^have a read and see what you think, try not to spam that thread up to much as a lot of valuable info will get lost.

Concur completely.

I think if too much 'chatter' gets added then some fair and just Mod pruning would be justified.

Very, very pinnable.

I have had a word with Cazzie and will take out the spam accordingly (that includes my own!). It already has some interesting results. :good:

Rather than spamming up the excellent thread over there, could you give me an idiot proof way of how to test the flow of the filter?
Do i need to take out the inlet/outlet out of the tank etc...sorry for being dense...

i shall be doing mine tomorrow, when i water change. I shall take a small amount of water out, then hold a large jug under the out flow for 10 seconds and then x accordingly. I will do it a few times and work out an average.

It would be worth doing it for a little longer than 10 seconds, any error is then multiplied by a factor of 360 leading to large inaccuracies, then again the mean value does increase reliability somewhat.

thats why i'd do more thank one test, i'd probably do about 10 tests, then work out the mean average. I'm not sure i have a jug big enough!lol I would probably disregard any large anomalies.

we have to remember this is quite loose, and cannot be done to the book. It'll only give us a loose average. It's very interesting regarding the APS filters.

That did surprise me somewhat, surprised that some of the flow rates deviate from the manufacturers flow rates so much.

that's a good suggestion. I was planning on detaching from the tank and running a test on a 10L bucket in the shed. Would be much easier to do it in situ.

What about editing the first post with peoples results in? then the spam/chatter wont matter too much.

I did wonder about that... although my thought was actually some kind of table/spreadsheet into which peoples results can be added, so that all the different results from the same filter are together and easy to see. If people posted their various tests, the average could go on the table.

bump...

just done my filter and got a nice surprise. :good:

we still need members to test out there filters! :good:
