Hi all,

I'm having trouble identifying exactly what my favourite little creature actually IS. I'm confused as to whether he/she is a bristlenose catfish or a suckermouth catfish or a pleco or an ancistrus or whatever! I've observed the differences on various websites but they seem to be negligible.

To aid the identification I have some links below to photographs of him/her. I suspect it to be a female bristlenose catfish, but I'm hoping you guys can shed some light on that. Her(?) nickname is "slug". :)

slug1
slug2
slug3
slug4
slug5
slug6

I know, I should learn to use my camera properly *hangs head in shame*.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Alpha, welcome to the forum,

Ancistrus is the species bristle nose and they all belong to the plec family and they all have sucker mouths so all the names are right in a way. How big is it and how long have you had it. It looks different to my female bristle nose but there are a few varieties. Have you looked on www.planetcatfish.com as you may find your answer there.

Thanks for the quick replies.

She is about 15cm (6 inches), I've probably had her for just under a year or so. She used to be able to hide under her bog wood, but is now slightly too big. I would say she she has hardly grown since I got her though.

I'll take a look at the website you mentioned.

That does not look like a Bristlenose to me at all
But I'm a bit confused as to what exactly so lets wait and see what the others say

I agree, but didnt know for certain. All the Bristlenose Ive seen are darkish brown. I googled the Bristlenose too and didnt see any like that :dunno:

It looks cool whatever kind of Pleco it is. Where did you get it? Maybe you could ask them?

There are over 70 different species of bristlenoses, but I don't think that this is one of them, it's definately a species of plec, I think it may be an L001, glyptoperichthys joselimaianus (same as L022)

Warning! gets big! 12 inches!

That's her. :) Thanks SirMinion, at least I know what I have now. Hopefully the size won't be an issue as I am now looking to purchase a bigger tank. That was actually the reason I decided to try and identify slug, I wanted to know if the new tank would be big enough for full adult size.

Thanks again all.
