February 11, my mickey mouse platy gave birth. I know it was her because I saw it with my own two eyes and she was in the nursery tank when she gave birth.

Her fry now look like gold twin barred platy. Is it too early for the mickey mouse pattern to show up or is it possible she matted with a gold twin barred platy before I got her?

Don't get me wrong, they are still cute, but this is having me confused.

Thanks!

If you do not know what colour male(s) the female mated with, then there is no way of predicting what colour the fry will turn out. Colouration does take time to develop fully, usually until the fish is around 3 cm long, but sometimes until it is adult (5 cm long), depending on what the end result will be.

A twin bar pattern is a partial expression of a mickey mouse pattern. A mickey mouse pattern is simply one where the dark color extends into the caudal peduncle further than on a twin bar pattern. If you have a mickey mouse pattern on both of your fish, give it a bit of time to be expressed in the new fish.

She might have mated with a twin bar at the store. Was she in the same tank as the twin bars? My lfs doesn't separate males and females. I bought a female Mickey that was kept in the same tank as the wag tails. All but one of the fry have wag tails. Some have wag tails and Mickey spots.
