Plants Just Not Right

No pretty sure its a different cylinder, although I don't know for sure. Wouldn't think there would be much benefit in upping the CO2? Think I'll try running the lights longer and seeing what that does, then I know which thing it was. Thanks Dave :)

i have strong suspicion its the bleach you added.. leaving residue.

Sam, did you bleach the eco-complete as well? If you did then this is probably the cause as EC would've absorbed a lot of the bleach which is difficult to remove.

Yes I did bleach the EC, it was covered in BBA and I thought it would be the only way to get rid of it, doh! :X stupid now I think about it, hot water would have worked just as well. I wondered if it might have an absorption property I wasn't aware of. It would explain why the floating plants are doing so well and also why the ends of the HC/glosso that a growing above the substrate are doing better than those ends which have rooted into it.

I'll try running the lights at 10hrs for a few weeks just to be sure its not the lighting. If that doesn't fix it, its yet another complete strip down with fresh EC and new plants. At least if its the EC I know the T5 luminary was not to blame, was disappointed when that bit of kit didn't live up to expectations, esp when Dave S got his to work so well. I wonder how much money I've wasted trying all those different tubes! And time wasted for that matter!

Such is life :S

Thanks again

There you have it! We were all trying to be clever and scientific when the answer was under our noses.....Sam is a buffoon  :p

Oi! You cheeky git! We all live and learn Dave, it wasn't so long ago that you might have done something similar yourself, hell without me having made the mistake first you might well have done it too! :stupid:

Steve - yeah you're right, but as its such a small tank I need a complete substrate as I dont have room for a base layer topped with gravel type substrate, I wouldn't have any room for plants! I also want to get an EI tank working perfectly before I try changing things to much, no point constantly changing things if you never get anything to work correctly in the first place, I dont think I would learn much that way, only how not to succeed in a million different ways! That said, it I do fancy trying an ADA substrate, perhaps Amazonian, seeing how that does. Being a small tank it'd probably work out about the same price anyway.

My new 100g will probably have tropica substrate in it just to see how that one works.

Sod off you lot!

Although I will add that according to official government statistics, I'm classified a nerd B)

Mate, you can't honestly expect us not to take the pi$$ can you?

LOL

Hell if it were one of you lot, I'd be first in line for taking p@@s out of you!!!!

(I'm really not bothered ;) hope I didn't come across as annoyed, I'm not ;) you all know me well enough by now)

I was hoping George would give you a short term ban as a cooling off period. :byebye:

If you go for ADA Amazonia, I can recommend the powder size for planting HC. I had a small army of shrimp, and they never pulled up a single plant, provided you plant deep enough.

Dave.

Cheers for the tip Dave, was thinking I would probably stick with the HC carpet, get it to work again! Although I hear the powder is a sod to work with, gets blown every where at the slightest movement, that could make water changes interesting!

Sam

Apart from the huge ammonia spike for the first few weeks, I can`t fault the stuff. The water was crystal clear from the moment I filled the tank. I guess the clouding comes from shifting a lot of stems around, but I have only ever planted Eleocharis sp and HC which I have just left to their own devices.

I built up two slopes as well, both of which have stayed put. With a shallow tank like yours, I guess water changes could blow it about a little, but once the HC has carpetted it will hold it together no problem. I had to chuck my HC away when it became infested with rhizoclonium, but just recently, it has started growing from out of nowhere, bursting out through the Eleocharis. There must have been a few remnants left, but HC certainly seems to like Aqua Soil once it is established.

Dave.
