Piranhas going crazy

Hey, one of my friends just got a tank and bought 3 red bellied piranhas along with a shark. Everytime he turns on the light, the piranhas go crazy and swim everywhere insanely. After shutting off the light, you can see them breathing heavily as if they were about to die. It's quite strange. I looked it up on the internet but found nothing. any help?

Seems as though there spooked from the lights, has he tryed leaving them on for long hours and seeing if they come around to it?
