Well I can't afford purpose made filter media

And this isn't because I don't have money to devote to my hobby but because I don't have money to throw away on a ripoff, it seems silly to me. I mean, I wouldn't pay $50 for a cat bed when I can stitch one myself out of rag, so why would my fish be any different? This way, I have the extra money to spend on top quality fish food and water conditioners, which actually directly affect the fish's welfare.
