ok the yellows have gone back to the shop, but im still struggling to get my head around
why the gouramis and sharks have to go immediatly, they are 2 - 2.5 inch fish in a tank
that is about 1 metre long? sorry it doesnt make any sense yet.

the problem with keeping fish 'until they get too big for the tank' is that they actually won't get too big, they'll simply become stunted which can cause major damage to internal organs and to their immune system giving them an unavoidable death without ever reaching their full life expectancy. the damage will be done before you think they are too big so it's best to re-home them now before any damage is done to them and to give them time to be re-homed to somewhere big enough for them.

well ive just been to 3 fish shops (not pet shops, just fish) on my way home from work,
and they all said what ive got in the tank vs size of the tank is absoultely normal and fine
and there will be no worries at all.

so im sorry guys i know you all mean well but this will be my last post on this forum,
im gunna stick to local advise, maybe the fish bred here have different genes or something?

or maybe the fish shops want to make more money from you by selling you more fish when the ones you have die.

however i can't fault you for sticking to advice from the fish shop, it's only natural to think that they are the experts and have the fish's best interests at heart. Sadly this is not always the case but this isn't something we can expect newcomers to the hobby to know. Certainly in this instance I think the fish shop is to blame for the situation these poor fish are in.

If you're still around, Azzman, trust me, you can't trust the advice you're given from a lot of people working in fish shops. I've only had a tank for 4 months, and the amount of crap advice I've received from the lfs is unbelievable, especially when it comes to which fish to stock. I bought a pictus catfish (predator) on the advice of the lfs, him telling me it was an algae eater!
Not everyone on this forum gives you 100% correct advice, but if you're in any doubt go to the library and borrow a decent book. I've done so and usually find that the advice given on this forum is the same as in the books.

I have to agree. The information I have been given from all my LFS varies and differs so much that they contradict each other an awful lot. This forum has proven to be a huge help to me and many people here seem to certainly know what they're talking about - plus here they have nothing to gain from giving you advice whereas fish shops often do.

ok im back, (i know i said i wasnt) iv changed a couple of things,
the yellows are gone, as is the moonlight gourami (i thought it was a pearl),
and have added a female opaline gourami, i have read they only grow to 4".

150l, u.s. 39 gallon

2 bala sharks
2 opaline gouramis, male female
2 yo yo loaches
5 neons

is this fine? i know the balas grow but have been reading that they can
max out at 8".

I'm sorry to say, but are you positive the tank is 39 gallons? You said it was 35 once, then 52 the other but I don't think it's even 39 gallons to be honest and even if it was the Bala Sharks will need atleast a 75 gallon aquarium as they will get bigger then 8 inches trust me on that one, even with 8 inches I would still recommend 60+. Last time you posted you had 10 neons, have they been eaten? Agian, I really hate to put a damper but I still think those Opaline are going to get too agressive and they will get a little bigger then 5 inches given the chance.

Would you really want to house something that can get over a foot long in a tank like that? Picture how un-happy it will be...

To be honest with you, if it is 39 gallons and you removed everything else and got one more female Oplaine, you could make a very good breeding tank.

yes its 150l which is 39 u.s gallons and 32 uk gallons,

bellow is a description of a opaline taken off this website:

Size: 4-5 inches
Tank Size: 20-30 gallons
Temper: Semi-Aggresive
Other Tankmates: Larger Livebearers, Danios, Rainbowfish, Barbs, some more passive Cichlids, Loaches, Plecos, and Scavenger Catfish.
Remark: This fish look peaceful with its calming blueish color. But might get a little aggresive on other fish. This fish is also a bubblenest builder.


so according to this site my tank is the perfect size for opalines.
as for the sharks i guess thell have to go as well (the fish shop is kinda over me returning fish).

ant suggestions for a stocking list would be hugely appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the UK gallon is 20% larger then the US gallon so something is wrong...
If you give me the dimensions i'll be happy to find it out just to be sure...

Also, would you like to breed the Opaline? Because you could do:
39 gallon
Opaline- 1 male 2 female
Yo-Yo Loaches- 2
Giant Danio- 4
Small Dwarf Cichlid such as a Ram or Apisto-1

i dont have anything 2 measure it with at home but im a fabricator by trade so i know its roughly
3ft long, i put 18 10l buckets of water in it when i filled it, so allowing for buckets not being completely
filled to top its got to be 150l, i used a online volume conversion.

Cool! Okay well now that we know it's about 39 gallons go ahead and start to do some research. (I would mainly stick to this site) that www.fishchannel.com is pretty good also. Find the fish you like, and try to come up with a list of fish you could see swimming around happily with enough space. Just run it by us once you think you have everything you want for the tank, and we can help you if you have something that might not work.

Consider live plants to put in the aquarium also!
