Hi

My Cories have been on a mission this year to reproduce as much as possible. I currently have somewhere between 50 and 100 fry after a near 100% hatch from a spawning last Monday. Here's a couple of pics of my first batch where only 9 hatched and 8 remain...

1 week old...

7 weeks old...

Parents...

It's been hard work raising these but well worth it. After this last lot I don't intend to raise any more but how can I stop them from spawning? And what should I do with the eggs when they do?

Thanks!

well done they look great. if they are happy and spawning for you then the only real way to stop it is to remove either the male or female.... if they do spawn in a com tank then its likely that the eggs will get eaten by something before hatching or the fry will get eaten when looking for food if they do hatch. if you dont want any fry then either leave the eggs and see what happens or remove the eggs and dispose of them.

Hi Jamepsss :)

They are nice, healthy looking corys and it's natural for them to want to reproduce. If they produce unwanted eggs, you could either remove them and throw them away or let them hatch in the tank. The resulting fry will be eaten by the parents, other fish in the tank, or by your ADF.

Thanks very much!

I've recently bought a 200 litre so separating them could be possible. Adult wise I currently have (I think) 3 males and 1 female. My plan was to put all of the adults as well as the largest 3 or 4 of the fry in to the new big tank and let 5 of the new babies move into my 60 litre when they're big enough. Only trouble is I'm hopeless at catching the cories in a net to move them, they're just too fast for me!

I don't like to leave the eggs in the tank for too long as they soon go mouldy and fungal. The other fish don't tend to try and eat them when they're stuck to the glass but will dart at one if it falls away when I'm moving them. Problem is I feel guilty when they've gone to all the effort of breeding only for me to ditch the eggs so inevitably I end up putting them in the breeding net.

And as for the ADF eating the fry I wouldn't bet on it. I dangle a bloodworm right in front of his nose and he still misses it

Aw congrats, you have been fab with the fry, well done on all the hard work :good:

Thanks very much! Being a lurker on a superb, informative forum like this has helped immensely. I just hope and pray they make it to adulthood.

I've got all sorts of photo's and videos on my phone from the various stages including the female with a bunch of eggs stuck underneath her trying to decide where to deposit them. Fascinating stuff... but a little bit gross.

You lucky lucky thing! Due to my spawners being in a community I rarely see eggs (usually one or two unless real lucky) and never ever seen a female lay (hoping to catch her one day  ) do share the piccys and vids if you can! Love to see

congrats on the lovely babies!

That's strange because when mine spawn there's usually over 100 eggs and the community don't tend to bother with them. Great at first but now my reaction is usually "nooo not again!".

Anyway here's 2 vids...

This was Saturday morning a couple of weeks ago at about 10am...

The first batch at about 5 weeks

Cheers :good:

My fish are voracious at getting those eggs  Wow thanks so much for sharing, that female carrying the eggs is an absolutely fab shot, well done! And love teh whiskers on the 5 week olds  What brand trap is that you are using, the netting seems really great with younger fry and be interested into looking into it if dont mind :good:

I have two traps, one is Marina from Pets at Home. The one in the video is a cheaper one off Ebay but they're both practically the same.

Fab videos :hyper: :good: ,love the one showing the female carrying the eggs, now i see how they can spawn so many in one hit
My tri's just lay a few each time

What do you feed your fry on?

I give them Tetramin Baby in the mornings and frozen Baby Brine Shrimp in the evenings. I'm going to try crushed pellets on the first batch now that they're bigger.
