Photography Part 1 - Responses

Just had a read and sounds good. Need a camera though to try stuff with! Guide has started out really good HG! I will stop posting from now on :(

Dont start that empty vessel stuff with me now, I see where this is going

looking good right from the start. one question though as for posting photos are we just dealing with aquarium photography or general photography. ok 2 questions
on the other post you asked us to post what photo equipment we have but it also said in the subject heading dont post in this thread so i will post it here

I have an olympus sp550uz, and a tripod that i very rarely use even when i take it out with me coz i'm basically lazy and my missus moans if i spend too long messing with the camera
the camera cost approx £300 about 3 years ago i think, i would have to check the properties of one of my early photos taken with it to confirm the age, i've always considered it to be a compact but thats because i have never heard of "prosumer" and i hold my hand up to admit 99.9% 0f my photos are taken using a setting and not by manual because although ive tried i cant get to grips with the manual side. one of the main reasons apart from cost for me not owning a slr/dslr
i have been using google picasa photo editing for a few years now, and am quite experienced in its use, although i try not to change the pictures i take too much and i have literally 1000's of my photos on the pc.
my favourite styles of photography are 1.nature macro 2. landscape/architecture 3. sunsets 4. general recording of family and friends.
what i struggle with...... definitely aquarium photography
let me know if you need examples of the above to let you judge my ability/lack of. i am always open to constructive criticism. have tried stock photography in the past but got fed up with being continually turned down

examples of my photos can be found by following the link in my sig (beware there are lots there)

i have had a couple of my pictures chosen for the nature pic of the day website.......... Kevin

I will deal with all photography early on when we are discussing basic as illustration for Depth of field and shot composition etc makes much more sense and is easier to show using illustrations from outside the world of Aquariums, so hopefully people understand the concept first before we apply it in a tank.

You're right I will edit that, I do want them posted here but didn't really think about it until the end so forgot the earlier reference, must proof read again too as I didn't really do it properly, will see what the Queen of Marine thinks about this answers on a seperate post thing, I will bump the main Photo one everyday to keep it floating.

To be honest mate you are just at the right place with your photography. I should imagine you understand how useful a well controlled crop can be and I will check out your pics later, although from memory I'm sure you have some good ones. Stock photography is hard to get things accepted for there are so many places you can buy pics these days. I sold some to a gallery a few years ago which are pics I did for my daughters bedroom, will find them later and stick a few up. Hopefully once we get into aperture control and depth of field you will look at some old pics and see that it will completely change some of your photos.

Is this just for the Marine section, or will you be sharing this with everyone on TFF. Hahaha, you remember my thoughts on this, don't you?

By all means it can go wherever it wants, but I will reiterate what I said that I have had negative responses when posting in Photography sections before, if the post goes elsewhere and I start getting a hard time or people trying to make things complicated by having their say then I will stop doing it. This is written with the people that I consider friends in mind and I would much rather run the whole course of posts (about 4 weeks) with a more limited audience where I can monitor and help people as we go and still keep it an achievable task, see how useful it is, get the feedback and then release wherever else you think it may be useful if it has done its job, and if not I can amend it as necessary.
I'm afraid people like to get technical and I don't think a load of questions from people trying to catch me out, while I'm trying to help people from a basic level to build their skills and understanding is useful at this stage.

Is a prosumer the same as a bridge camera? If so I've got one here and a tripod too!

Sorry ran out of time to answer earlier but I see it's been dealt with, I love bridge cameras and will post some photos taken with my old 5700 Coolpix next week.

Not talking about the photography section. Talking about for the rest of TFF that doesn't go into the photography section.

That most surely is their loss :p maybe a link to this thread for those members who want to join in the fun, basics course, but where oh where would you put the link (no rude answers!) although I suspect that if interested they will come on in anyway :good:

Really looking forward to this HG :good:

I have: an iphone, that probably doesnt count does it! A Fuji finepix 8000 which has been out of the box the grand total of thrice! Oh and a tripod, used once and left standing in front of the tank for a month, just in case......................until him indoors got fed-up with it and put it away, heck as like, where did he put it......................

I have come into this thread first, so will check out the other, in case ive got this all the wrong way round  and should be posting my details there :look:

No the I-phone doesn't count.

Especially as you have a perfectly capable Prosumer/bridge camera. As I think I said I did some testing for Fuji and all of their prosumer cameras are great and their SLR's are basically Nikon bodies with a Fuji chip inside so a big :good: for Fuji.
