I have among other tanks a 30L biorb, it has a fan tail in it at the moment, being in for about 4 weeks, anyway it has become more and more lethargic, choosing to sit at the botton on the substrate, hardly coming to feed at all.
Water parameters are ok, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10 ph around 7.0

So with those in mind I am stuck as to what is up with this fish unless the ph is wrong for a fan tail?

I dont know

a biorb isnt the best environment for a goldie and it only holds about 6.5 gallons.
fish sitting on the bottom are usually suffering from bad water quality. how often and how much do you do water changes?
even though your readings show good readings for nitrite and ammonia they dont show bacteria.
are there any other symptoms such as red streaks in the fins or the base of fins?

the ph is ok for the fish, goldies take a wide range of ph and as long as its stable then hes fine.

Yes, red stripes in the fins, I do a water change about 1 per week, 30%

Just done a quality check, Amonia 0.25, Nitrite 1 and Nitrate 10

So I have done a 50 % change, any more advice please

the streaks tell me its ammonia or nitrite poisoning. its hard to tell if the tank is still cycling or the waste from the goldie is pushing the values up, but as you have had the levels at 0 then i'm more inclined to say that the ammonia and nitrite are rising because you arent doing enough in the way of water changes.
try doing 30% each day for a week and try to use a gravel vac of some kind to get into it and clean all the crap that might be lurking.
using aquarium salt will help your fish through any nitrogen hikes. add 1 teaspoon per gallon and again 12 hours later and remember when you do water changes to add the same back again.
to be honest you would do better for your fish to get a 10 gallon tank with decent filtration.

Fan tails will live for over ten years and get to around 10" in length, so hope your prepared to eventually get a 48g tank for him?

If you want a lasting coldwater setup in a bio-orb, and I think alot more interesting than a goldifsh. You could get a couple of rosy barbs, some white cloud minnows, some danios, a paradise fish even some some killi fish (but not all at the same time!). As long as the bio-orb is in a room which stays fairly warm >18C they will live quite happily.

cheers for the help, I'll go for a 30% water change each day for a week and see what happens along with salt, will let you know
