Apart from having a bit of a problem getting the ammonia to zero in my 2 week old tank (Jewel Trigon 190) the PH level is about 6.5. I understand a level of 7 is preferred for my community tank (Tetra, Cory, Clown, Gourami, Pleco. Should i make an immeadiate effort to get a PH balance kit? Also, ok to continue to do frequent water changes until the filter system gets upto speed on the bacteria producing front to combat the ammonia?

most fish will be ok in that pH, in fact some will thrive better in it; discus, most tetras, angels etc
it is far better to have a stable pH than to go messing around with it.
this topic should help you if your want to understand water better.
