Pets At Home

My LFS doesn't sell dwarf gourami's in odd numbers, only in pairs so I've had to have a look abit further afield as I want 1 male and 2 females (to farm out the aggression.)

Pets at Home are one of my options. What are peoples experiences of them in terms of the quality of the fish? Dwarf gourami's are notoriously fragile as it is.

This isn't a thread about how bad P@H are, I just want to know if fish people have bought from there have a reasonable survival rate. Or alternatively, if anyone can recommend an alternative they've experience of in the Hemel Hempstead area that they know and trust.

I bought a dwarf gourami and it died within a day and took out 4 other gourami's

I have noticed that Pets at home has improved recently.. well, in my area anyway. I havn't brought any dwarfs from there but I did use to get a lot of fish from there in the past and they were fine. Had a couple of bad ones tho, but you do in most places. Just look out for any dodgy ones in the tank.

Pets @ Home is the same thing as Petsmart, right? If so, i bought a Powder Blue gourami from them, it was fine for about 2 -3 weeks, then got sick and died. So, im not sure if it was just a bad quality fish ( he was VERY pretty), or i killed him on accident!

I have also bought from [email protected] a number of fish....I always check the tanks for dead or diseased fish...but have to say I have not really had a problem with the fish I have bought...dwarf gourami's do seem very fragile...I have now have 4...and all have died....! They were all bought at P@H but in saying that...I think the particular breed is prone to disease....!

As fish are friends said...where ever you go...you will always get a fish that are maybe not as healthy as they should be.

Have to say there is one particular guy in my local [email protected] really knows his stuff....I always look out for him when I visit...bet he actually thinks I have a crush on him...the amount of times I go to that shop...LOL.....

To be honest I wouldn't buy a dwarf gourami from anywhere whether it's p@h or not, all of them are full of disease where ever they come from.

I haven't been in a few years (moved away from the area), but I used to get my fish from Hertfordshire Fisheries, I found them to be fairly good in terms of quality. They're based out of Burstons garden centre in Chiswell Green, just near St. Albans. Like I say, it's been a while and things may have changed, but may be worth a look.

My local pets at Home has definitely improved recently. I have ahd some guppies from them lately and all have been just fine, no disease. I would just make sure the other fish in the tank look OK, don't buy if there is any sign of disease or death in the same tank. saying that I bought 3 dwarf gouramis from another pet store, they looked fab, but all were dead within a month. Poor things, they all got ulcers, and last one got columnaris too.
Is your tank big enough for regular gouramis? I just bought a golden gourami and he is magnificent!

Just use common sense, ive had a dwarf gourami for months now, no problems If you see any dead, diseased or generally inactive/acting strangely fish in the tank or in another tank connected to it, dont take the risk Its also good to choose a specimen which is active and bright.

i've been in some stores where every tank has 2 or 3 dead and rotting fish,
however my most local one is very good and i shop there often as well as my other
choice suppliers.

Unfortunately, DG are notorious for contracting a terminal virus, called dwarf gourami iridovirus, especially those from singapore. I think that the figure was 22% of the gouramis from there are infected.

I would only get them from a breeder, the ones from the fish store always die in a day for me.

mine lasted for around 8 months before he contracted the DG virus and died.
