I think everyone that is a pet fanatic has wanted to start a pet store at some point. I wanted to when I was a little kid but obviously couldn't because I was a little kid. Now that I am older I have been thinking about it seriously. I have some experience with how business works but no idea how to actually get started.

Do you have to have a license to sell pets (beyond the obvious license to own and operate a commercial business)? I am going back to college this fall to take business classes and was wondering if there were any specific classes for this type of business? I don't even know how pet stores supply themselves let alone how the profit margins and such are set up. Could a bank help me figure out the business plan or is that something I would go to a financial advisor for?

I was thinking about running a pet store for someone else (a chain store, like PetsMart or Pet Co.) but I don't agree with the way that they run their businesses. I would like to be able to sell fish that I bred and be able to control which fish are sold so that no genetically altered or inked fish are there.

you're in luck!

I've actually written out a full business plan for setting up a pet store (since I intend to next year)

I don't know the laws for setting up this sort of business in the states but I can give you a brief guide of the sort of things you will need to know. I don't know if there are classes to learn to set up animal orientated businesses in the US, but from what I've learnt all businesses run from a business plan (your local bank may be able to supply you with a business start up pack which contains a guide on setting up a business as well as points you need to consider etc). Most banks will be happy to talk to you about this sort of thing.

If you want to discuss anything with me, just let me know and I'll be willing to help.

See if there in an entreprenureship class available in the college you are going to attend. I'm in that class right now and it is really helpful! ;)
