Pet Insurance

I think for the average family pets insurance is a waste of $$. We have 4 working dogs. We are talking they go out run, jump, do bitework, track, etc. and our average vet bill including shots (tags are separate) is about $100 USD per dog (average)if we have an injury. We are a minimum vaccination home and after initial rounds of puppy shots we only do rabies vacs. We do heartworm and flea and tick stuff. I see no reason to spend hundreds of dollars on insurance when I can spend an average of 500 or less of my own cash when needed.

we put money aside everymonth instead of paying insurance. we did looked into buying them until we found most of them don't cover the cats once they reach the age of 9, which i don;t agree with. speaking of vets there are some good vets out there which put animal welfare 1st rather than lining their pockets which we recently found out. we have been with a vet practice ever since we had the cats and they have a health check and booster jab every year. we have notice last year the prices have increased alot and at the last check up the vet said frosti needed to have his teeth clean and have one of his canine remove. they gave us a quote of £450. the year before sandi had his teeth clean and 1 tooth removed, it only costed £130. when we got home we booked the cats for a 2nd opinion with another vet ( a very reputable practice but it was not close to our home) in which we were told he dosn't need the tooth remove as it doesn't bother him and is not inflame, also the removel of the tooth would make him very sore for a while not to mention £450 out of pocket. needless to say, we have change our vet.

btw floyds mum: £9 !!! that is so good. we got quoted £20/m/pet from the vet. which we put that aside intead.

The vet in my town charges 52USD for the office visit alone. If we take more than one dog that doubles. 20 miles away I found another vet that charges 15USD per office visit and only 15 if we take more than one dog! Much cheaper and better service!

For me personally, Pet insurance has been a life saver. I bought 3 kittens last year, 2 siblings and 1 unrelated. I took out the trial "4 weeks free insurance" by Petplan offered at the vet's. Within a week of having the first kitten, she was having treatment for blocked anal glands, added up to about £400, which was covered. She will be having the glands removed this year, which no doubt will be an expensive op.

When I brought the brother and sister home, they both became ill very quickly as it turns out they have severe food allergies to all food apart from Lamb and Beef. Poor Kovu had to spend over a week in the hospital with severe gastroenteritis (due to the food allergies, which they didn't diagnose until he was home) which he had to have all sorts of tests for in case it was something very serious.

His bill alone was £1600 in the first 4 weeks, again all covered! His sister had a smaller bill of maybe £100, but some of that was covered too.

All in all, i'm grateful for the insurance!
