Hello,

I have Ramshorn Snails & Bladder/Tadpole/Pouch Snails in my tank which I didn't mind at first but now I've started noticing holes in my plants. Does anyone know which type of snail is eating them?

I have been removing many Ramshorn snails every night but left the Bladder/Tadpole/Pouch Snails for the moment.

Thanks.

I know from experience that the Bladder/Tadpole/Pouch Snails do.

Agreed. Theyre a nitemare to get rid of as well. If you want to you need to strip out all plants and ornaments. Do a very thorough gravel vac. Thoroughly clean all filter parts to get rid of eggs, obviously take great care of media and spnge during this time. Scrub all ornaments then bleach dip plants in a 1:20 solution. Make sure your bleach doesn't have lots of extras in it to make it smell nice etc. the cheaper the better really. Dip for no more than 2 minutes then wash under warm water very carefully. Some finer and more delicate plants will not survive this process so it's up to you to decide if you go ahead or throw them out. Then replace everything and done!

To prevent in future, bleach dip and thoroughly wash all new plants you get and quarantine them if youre felling extra cautious.

The easier alternative is to keep remiving snails as and when you see them but in my experience, if you have a lot of them in your tank already, this method is next to useless as they are constantly breeding, laying eggs and appearing out of no where.

Drove me mad but I finally got rid of them with method 1.

:good:

What you could do to help get rid of snails is to get some Zebra loaches. I got 3 for my 180 l tank as I was syphoning out lots of snails every day. Little by little over a week or so there were fewer and now its down to 1 or 2 at the most per day and the loaches are great to watch- always looking for another one to crunch.

Lads & Ladettes....

MUCHO easier way. It worked for me.
My tank is small & I have plants, fish and shrimp.

To make matters infinitely worse, the little sods had infested themselves into my internal filter system.

The answer to completely ridding any kind of tank setup is to regularly dose with some 'Flubenol 15' (It does NOT caontain copper BTW). 4 weeks should do it. (It will take about 1 to 2 weeks before the snails start disappearing, 4 weeks to cover hatchlings from any eggs left over).

Say 'bye bye snails'...

If you want a pretty much surefire way to get rid of em, get some clown loaches (if you have a tank big enough for atleast 3) and your problem should be gone sooner than later :D

Thanks for all the replies.

I have some clown loaches in another tank and know that they could help eat the pest snails but I also have trumpet snails and 5 apple snails in the tank so wouldn't the clown loaches eat these aswell?

your apple snails are TOO BIG for the clown loaches mouth :shout: ! hehe

:good: i dont think you will need to worry!

 Oh Dear Creature seeker! you are in a mess! I would offer the advice of taking your precious snails out and treating the tank with a snail killing treatment, then do a water change and add the nice ones back into the tank??? or add your loaches and pop the good ones out??? i have a feeling the apple snails are slightly larger to be eaten but test them with your clown loaches first to avoid tradgedy! :-( x

 i have loaches that like eating snails if you catch them i'll take them for food!!!!! :hyper:
