As the title suggests, I have a snail issue. I have had it for several weeks and I think I have posted on here before about it a while back.
However, the snails (tadpole snails I believe) seem to be breeding like crazy despite my efforts. I have been removing some (usually at least 20-30) every few days for the past few weeks but it just doesn't seem to be working - a few days later, there are another 20-30+ more snails to remove. I have tried veggie traps with brussel sprout 'layers' and cucumber slices, but again, the numbers don't go down.

And, with the tank only being 28L, there seems to be a lot of pest snails in there for the volume of water. They don't seem to have any positive impact on the tank, so surely if anything, all they are doing is creating more ammonia?

I have two assassin snails, but they don't appear to have much of an impact - perhaps there are too pest snails for them to 'deal' with? I understand that they only tend to 'deal' with snails of a certain size, so could this also be a contributing factor? They don't seem to be very active tbh - I'll see them moving around for a day or so, then they'll hardly move at all (often partially buried under the sand substrate or on their side somewhere) for a few days.

I have wondered about medication, but I have some red cherry shrimp and rudolph shrimp in there so I fear it would harm them. I have no other tanks for them to go in while the tank is medicated. If I was able to temperarily remove them though, how could I go about removing the medication fully before re-introducing the shrimp? Activated carbon in the filter? W/Cs? How long would it take for the tank to be free of the toxin?

Does anyone know of any snail treatments which don't harm shrimp?

Thanks :)

I crush mine and let then drop into the tank. Are you over feeding that's what mine was from?

As above, I would say it has to be an over-feeding issue. How often do you feed? Once a day, 6 times a week is usually sufficient for fish. Not sure if it's just a shrimp tank, but I would guess even less feeds for a shrimp only tank. Can anyone verify?

Just a small pinch of food on an evening (sometimes missing a feed) for corys. They're C.Pygmaeus, and I am aware they need a larger tank - LFS advice for you. I do hope to upgrade someday :good: Aside from that, I have my betta, who gets 3-4 floating Hikari pellets 6 days and a bit of pea on the other day. I never see any left over food so I can't imaging I'm overfeeding. I don't specifically feed the shrimp, I just leave them to tackle any algae or remaining bits of food :good:

I thought Betta ate snails. Is this not true, anyone?

From what I understand, most bettas are fine with snails and it's not very common for them to be uncompatible. Shrimp are more questionable, but usually they are fine too. Mine lives with snails, shrimp and other fish and is generally fine with them :good:
