People Giving Bad Advice

I have been visiting assorted fish boards over the years and have learned to do two things whenever I join a new one or participate for some time on one. Step one is to read a lot of the posts to learn who actually has a clue what they are talking about. I identify the true experts and then listen to what they say. Step two, identify those who always ask and never listen, and then don't waste your time trying to help them.

The same thing applies to fish chats as well.

^^^ Amen to that! :good:

4) drive under the speed limit in the left lane (or ?right in the UK?)

I am pretty sure* it's the same as here in Oz. We drive in the left lane and when there is double lanes, right in fast, left is slow.

*Notice the "pretty sure" part of the above sentence. I am not advocating that it is 100% reliable advice, simply that I am a good 99% sure that the advice I am giving is factual and concise. If anyone would like to jump down my throat, clip me around the earhole or otherwise put me back into my box then feel free to do so here, I'm a big boy and can handle it, as I am sure a good majority of other forum users can. I.E: This thread is pretty pointless. As others have said, just bring it up in the thread in question. Just keep it friendly and to the point without flaming the person you think is giving bad advice and I'm sure 99% of forum-goers out there aren't going to mind. Works for me  Seeing as how the majority of my post is now a footnote, I'm going to sign off for now

Seems people have different thoughts about this.. I thought it made more sense to post here, rather then call someone out, as they'd probably be offended. No big deal though, everyone takes things their own way.

Black Angel you can call me whatever you want, but you obviously didn't understand why I posted it here in the first place, which is fine.

When we speak of giving advice, I think we should remember that's exactly what it is, advice based usually on someone's experience. In a complex hobby such as this, it is inevitable that differing opinions will be offered on many occasions, and the whole point of the forum, to my mind, is to seek those responses. What works well for one member may not suit someone else, and we need to make a balanced judgement that takes into account many factors, including the ecconomics of implementing suggested changes. Interestingly, I do business with a large UK public aquarium, and they tell me that the majority of innovative advances in the keeping of aquatic life have come about directly through the dedication of the serious hobbyist.

Sometimes, people only take the advice when it's what they want to hear (e.g. buy more fish)
Sometimes, people give advice taken straight from a book, which annoys people.
Sometimes, people give advice based on their own experience. Sometimes peoples experience goes against what is normally seen. e.g. if someone cycled a tank with neon tetra and they all survived. Sometimes people claim experience which they don't have, or exaggerate.
So, there will always be a temptation to get really irritated whenever anyone disagrees with you on a forum, or for people to get irritated at you.

I guess there's really no way to moderate crappy advice, but it seems everytime I read the forum, someone gives out bad/wrong advice, and it's starting to irritate me.

That's just me venting I guess, but it does get annoying when people are looking for help, get bad information, and go ahead and listen to X person, and get themselves in more problems..

also..

why do some people ask for advice, and not take any of it?? It's such a waste of time for everyone involved.. I always see people asking ''is this fish ok with this'' .. 10 people will say no.. then they're like hooray I got a bunch of them!!!...

If you don't want advice, and aren't going to take anyone's advice, don't ask for it..

That was a total contradiction right there ^^ but hopefully people will understand what I'm getting at.

It's the TFF's staff who need to keep an eye out on this if it poor advice then the staff should be aware of it then delete it thats what we do on the other site i moderate on.

Bad advice SHOULD be deleted what happens if you get a newbie and he / she decides to take the bad advice and ends up doing some damage ??? The staff should be clamping down on this IMO

Sorry staff if i have come across a bit blunt i truely ment no offence to any of you.

Thats exactly why it's up to the staff to stomp on it and flush all the Bull S*** out.

I think it has been said before, but the voluneteers that TFF has who are the moderators and administrators have a lot more pressing things than weeding out any posts they believe to be bad advice.

IMO, the easiest approach is let the advice and let the recipient judge for him or her self what is the best situation.

A good listener will always take on board what is said by everyone, just as a good TFF'er will take on board all posts and comments and (if they are really good) supplement this with their own research, before making a decision.

There is nothing to take into account people who ignore what they don't want to hear.

As well as this, a lot of advice is subjective - is there such thing as bad advice?!

I have only been here a week and I don't think any number of moderators can keep up with the sheer volume of posts on this site so asking the moderators to read every post and judge it's worthiness is impossible (plus they might have a different but maybe incorrect opinion  ).

Just remember the old saying "Opinions are like a-holes. Every one has one (including our fish :hey: ) and someone else will always think your smells worse then his."   :)

Seeing as it's your thread, vancouver, you can PM a mod to close it if you feel your original concern has been addressed. :)
