yes bettas are siamese fighting fish. most ppl would say they are a solitary fish. i on the other hand have had no problems mixing them wit a few diff fish. depending on the size tank ofcourse. but this cauld also come down 2 the personality of the fighter, he might enjoy the company he might aslo see the other fish as his only personal chew toy. usualy u can pic the personality of the fighter in the shop. if he looks aggresive n flares at everything he sees then probably not. tho if he looks peacfull then he should b fine. bettas that lay on the bottem can usualy mean they are sleeping but if u watch him 4 a while n he doesnt seem like he wants 2 move this can often mean a sick or old fish, as u dont often know the age of the fish wen he arrives at the fish shop.
i have kept mine wit a variety of tetras tho i found silver tips tetras 2 b agressive wit most fish especialy if the other fish are slower moving or smaller.

ok guys i'm going to have to disagree with you neons are completly harmless i stand by that if anything you should worry about the betta bullying them in a 10 gallon tank I would think he would have enough room to swim around ive seen them set up peacfully in 5 gallons

The only reason I said about neons was because that's what happened with mine. I had 6 neons and 6 Harlequins with my first Betta in a 42g tank. The neons took took to chasing him and he used to hide in the corner. That's just my experience, maybe I had evil neons!

I don't think I was doing anything! They are now in a tank with Harlequins, Javanese Ricefish, Minnows etc. and they are fine. Obviously took a dislike to my Betta!
