Parrot Fish Has Issues...

If they are only growing 2-3 inches in 2 years they aren't in a big enough tank..

I used to cram my cichlids into tanks and stunt them.. not a cool thing to do.

You'd be amazed how fast fish grow when they aren't in overstocked tanks.

Well the tank certainly isn't overstocked, it contains 2 fish and the second one is only a recent addition. He probably does need a larger tank but there's no possibility of upgrading it at the moment due to space so until then...

My boyfriend managed to film Jake having one of his twitchy moments. The film is about a minute long so try not to get too bored, we couldn't find a way to cut the film down! Any ideas now? He's really starting to worry me.

well, he certainly is an amusing little critter. :p seems to have quite a personality! anyhow, although his behavior is rather odd, it doesn't seem to be anything too serious. i would just keep an eye on him and make sure the episodes aren't getting more frequent or anything. he very well could just be being playful.

A 30g tank with a parrot cichlid isn't overstocked?

Thats news to me

according to almost all lfs, no, it isn't. pretty much all of them will tell you that a 30 is the minimum size for a parrot. perhaps not the most spacious living conditions... but still technically possible.

I don't care if 800 000 lfs employees tell you to keep a 8'' fish in a 30g tank. It's not big enough. Parrot cichlids need at least a 55g tank

It's technically possible to keep a 12'' oscar in a 10g tank.. that doesn't make it right.

If you want to stunt your fish, if you want to shorten it's life, keep it in a 30g tank..

I'm not meaning to attack the person that created this topic, because it was the lfs fault, not theirs, but people like fish fetish spreading bad information need to be told that what they're doing is not right.

pardon? i didn't say that it was right, AT ALL. i said it was what most lfs said was correct- which, if i'm not misunderstanding, is what you said as well. don't accuse me of spreading bad information!!!

I certainly wouldn't keep him in a 30g tank if I could help it, nobody ever informed me how big a parrot fish would grow, what their nature was like or anything else. The lfs had been fantastic in the past and I had no reason to believe that they were wrong when they advised me what to buy. I'm sorry if you think I'm cruel for doing this but he is very well looked after.

I said it wasn't directed at you.. you got bad information.. it's not your fault.. sorry if you thought I was attacking you.

'' A 30g tank with a parrot cichlid isn't overstocked? Thats news to me''

''according to almost all lfs, no, it isn't. pretty much all of them will tell you that a 30 is the minimum size for a parrot. perhaps not the most spacious living conditions... but still technically possible.''

''still technically possible''... that will lead others to believe they can do it.. which they shouldn't.. you're saying it's ok to by saying it isn't overstocked.

ANYWAYS, it's too bad some lfs just want sales.. I know what it's like, I used to work for one.

i said it's still technically possible... not good for the fish by any means, but they can live in it. just like a one room house... we would be quite uncomfortable, but if we had to, we could make do. i'm not justifying it at all! in fact, i work at a LFS and chew people out that come in saying they have oscars or parrots in a 30gal. so please stop to think before you accuse me of being one of "those people" that spreads bad info.

Well until now, you hadn't said it wasn't something you should do.. you said it was something that could be done.

It shouldn't be done.. period

understood, but i didn't say it was something that should be done.
you could probably swallow a piece of rat poison... does that mean you should? no.
i was pointing out that, according to fish stores, it IS okay to keep parrots in a tank that small. i was defending her and attempting to point out that it wasn't her fault, but rather the LFS. i'm sorry if it was not received the way it was intended, but i still feel you jumped to conclusions based on too little information.

"but people like fish fetish spreading bad information need to be told that what they're doing is not right."

that's the thing that offended me. i care for the wellbeing of that fish just as much as anyone else here. i'm not trying to further the argument, but i am still somewhat irked at the suggestion that i'm spreading lies that will hurt fish. if you could perhaps just apologize for that, so that future readers don't see this topic and assume i am unreliable.
