We live in Northern California east of the San Francisco Bay Area. We have very few nights where the temperature gets down to freezing every year. We have a tiger barb living in a whiskey barrel pond and are wondering if he will be able to make it outdoors through the winter. We can add a heater if we need to but were just wondering if anyone else has had any experience with tropical fish outdoors. He did great all summer and the temperature here gets up to 110 of higher at times. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

:hi: to the forum. Introduce yourself in the newbie section.

Not exactly sure if putting tropical fish outdoor is advisable. Sudden temp drops will definitely harm these fish, and it's almost certain that the fish would die if this were to occur...

Tiger Barbs are a genuine "tropical" fish. They come from Sumatra originally and are a warm water species. They become lethargic below 70F, (I assume you use F), and would probably not survive much cooler then that.

If you really cant set them up inside why not wrap the whole thing in insulation and get a BIG heater like a 250(2). Also are you useing half a barrel or a whole barrel?

why and how did you end up with a tiger barb in a barrel?

for god sake buy a tank buy it some friends and move it inside

I live in Arizona and breed tropical fish out side in my pond, unless you keep the water's temp. to the amount it needs(like 74-76*) Then they will surley die -_-
