Hi

Just wanted to "announce" I bought my very first Oto's yesterday. they are amazing! I thought they would probably hide on release into the tank, but no, they just acted as though they had been in the tank forever. Busy busy busy. they are fascinating to watch. such characters. I only bought 3, and 2 of them seem to be a pair, at least they spend all their time together whilst the other goes off on his/her own, and then they all get back together for a while. (does this mean I should get some more)??

Any advice about these gorgeous fish most welcome.

Hi,

I've had mine about a month now. I've got four and three of them have stuck together and one which is growing slightly bigger goes off on his/her own. All 4 have been spotted stuck to the same piece of glass on occasions. The are abso bril at getting rid of algae on the glass and plants. They also love to dart around the tank, not minding the other fish at all. The best bit for me is the tails, just like two prong forks and seeing their little fat tummy's, when they are up against the glass. They really are lovely characters. I bought a little cave for mine, but they usually just lay on it. As mine are juniors, I'll have to wait, How big are yours mine are about 2cm at present. All the best :good:

Just measured one of mine through the glass he/she is 3 cm. so probably still have a bit of growing to do.

I agree, great little fish to watch.

I don't seem to have any luck with keeping them for long though. I'm now on my second batch & 3 have died within a month. All my tank parameters seem to be fine but i have read that they can be extremely sensitive little fish.

Apart from that, their a superb addition to any aquarium.

All 4 are still going strong, they are also growing I guess when they reach 5cm that's when they reach maturity. Do they breed easily? or should I be looking at doing something special for them. They certainly are my cuties :hyper:

Thanks for that Christi_22,

Mine are allways up and down the glass chasing each other, I'll keep a look out. My water temp is around 25dg C. Mind you if they did deposit eggs on the glass, they may well end up a Apple Snail food? :good:

No problem :)

That's the thing with community tanks, even if the fish do breed, any fry have to take their chances with the big guys.

Well, I lost one of my Otto's this weekend, it could only have happened the day before I found it, because I count them every day (sad I know). I've had them a few months now and they were so active. All I can think off is that it wasn't quick enough and got rammed by a darting Bala Shark. :-(

Hi i had some ottos and i lost them after about a month, there was plenty of algae and water was perfcectly fine and they were constantly attatched to the tank sides eating algae, i currently have 2 dwarf corys and they perfectly fine.
Im wanting to get some more but does anyone have any advice on keeping them alive?
They are gorgeous little fish and i love them i just want to keep these ones alive :D
