I went to my lfs today and they had oscars in a liarge tank. They were near enough fully grown and I've decided I want some.

So here my question what is the minimum tank size for 2 best filter and what kind of substrate and deco because I've read they can be quite destructive lol.

Sorry I know I've posted this in the wrong section but iwerent sure what section it should be in

Any info you guys could share with me on these awsome fish would be a massive help as I won't really believe what I read online unless u guys back it up lol

I should think around 100+ gallons for two.

Try the new world cichlids section.

Really that big? What about just 1 I don't think I've got enough room here for a tank that big lol.

General "rule" is 75 gallons for 1 150 gallons for 2 - though some people keep 2 in less but these are big fish that create a lot of poop.... got to give them the space they need and also sufficient water and filtration as to take care of them.

I'd say 75 gallons for one. needs to be 2 ft front-to-back too so they can turn round easily.

Ok thanks I think that idea will have to take the back seat for a while. Never mind can any 1 recommend a fish that gets to a good size but doesn't need such a big tank.

Jack dempseys can be housed in a 55 Gallon.

How big do they grow? I want a tank to have a few bigger fish in as I've got my community tank with fish that won't grow too big but want 1 that I can tell me son they will eat him if he's naughty lmao (only jokin)

What size tank you got?

Lol jacks get to around 8 inches.

I haven't got a bigger tank yet my community tank is 130 litres so too small for jacks so I'm going to get a bigger tank for big fish lol but I don't want to go down the road of gettin a bigger tank as the fish grow I want the size tank an adult would need if that makes sense lol

Might be easier to think of the maximum tank size you would be able to get and then think of what could go in that.

+2, check out salvini too, they're nice fish but can be pretty aggressive.
Only mention them because that's one of my dream fish some day.

From what i read, 55g will house a breeding pair but that'd limit tank mates and i'd personally have a spare tank ready to split them up if worst comes to worst.

i hav etwo six inchers in a 47g hospital tank and they crap twizzlers. if you want a pair be prepared for that. I have a barebottomed tank just so i can siphon poo twice a day

this is amazing fish...BUT, u have to be ready to deal with them...they are really clever and over reacting(open curtains, standing box, decor changing, decor movement etc.-it can stress them or get angry, then they will just stays in a corner and stops eating...sometimes they stress them self without a reason). and makes a lot of mess...they are always hungry, and they know how to ask for food  every oscar have their personality. they are really agresive, best to keep 1 or 5+ and need hell a large tank as they grow really big. if u want to get him a friend its hard, my oscar livd with plec(when oscar gets bored he can start being meanie). suggest u not to plant your tank as it gonna be eaten away or at least pull out(i had plastic plants, so for him was like a toy, he was pushing it around the tank), same with sand or grav(he is gonna make his own decorations :D my oscar used to dig hole till he reach glass bottom then c him self there and gets agresive). besides that this is absolutely fab fish. well u have to keep it to feel it. it was our favourite and the most loved pet. unfortunately it died(was so sad that had depresion, and was thinking to finish with fish keeping)
