Hiya, just wondering if Oscars ever have eyesight problems. My albino Oscar doesn`t seem to see the food anymore so inevitably it`s not eating much. Anything it eats is purely luck :-( Any ideas??

How do his eyes look? Any mistyness or clouding over of the eye? Any bulging of the eye?

There`s no bulging but there`s very slight clouding around the centre of each eye.

Can I ask how long have you had him? What size is he? And do you know your water stats, specifically for ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte.

It could be a bacterial infection, how long has it been like this and does it look like its spreading?

I`ve had him about 4 years and he`s about 10 inches. Water is fine. Actually did all the checks today before the water change. I`d say he`s been like this for a couple of months. I took a video of him and took it to my local shop. They said he was probably just recovering after the Octozin treatment and recommended a general tonic.

Octozin? was that for Hole in the Head or something else?
what are you feeding and what sized tank is he in?

If a fish gets into a state where it catches HITH then other illnesses such as bacterial infections will often follow

Yeah it was for hole in the head. I feed him Hikari Gold Cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm and sometimes frozen cichlid mix. My tank is 5`x 18" x 18"

Strong treatments like that on top of the illness will usually weaken a fish's immune system and if the Oscar has cloudy eyes and is obviously having difficulty seeing then it may either be linked to the HITH disease that may have left it temporarily or even permanently blind or more like the cloudy eye is a secondary illness and therefore has been caused by either a poor diet (in this case doesn't seem likely) or poor water conditions or a bacterial infection.

Just to clarify could you post the water stats?

I would treat the Oscar with something like tetracycline or Maracyn as that should have a positive effect.
Also it may be worth giving the oscar a multivitamin tablet every now and then to help improve its immune system and general health

That`s good to know, thanks. I`ll try and get one of those tomorrow and see if he picks up.
