I am one of those nuts who purchased a 75 gallon tank and placed one Oscar in it. If you own one fish it should be an Oscar. I have had my Oscar for approximately two months now, and it is like a real pet. Every time it sees me it swims up and down real fast because it knows it is going to be fed. I can hand feed him/her and sometimes it will let pet it. I understand a fish has no cereberal cortex and is probably incapable of an emotion such as affection, but I cannot help but be charmed by the way my Oscar acts. It is one cool fish and I have no regrets at all about having just one fish in a 75 gallon tank.
Just one word of caution to those of you considering purchasing an Oscar. First, for about the first week or two it will sulk about the tank until it gets adusted. There is nothing wrong with your Oscar, it is just acting like an Oscar acts. Second, Oscars eat like pigs and grow like crazy. I have only had my Oscar for approximately two months and already it has grown about one and half to two inches. Third, after only two months I aready had to treat my Oscar for Hexamitosis. I asked my LFS about this problem, and was told that South American Cichlids are especially prone to this parasitic infection. It was, however, easily treated with Hex Out. Despite, these few problems if you are thinking about purchasing a 65 or 75 gallon tank for one Oscar I would encourage you to go for it. Believe me, you will never regret it.
