i have two baby oscars maybe about an inch and a half, could a convict be put in with these oscars? if the oscars grow too fast, the convict can be put in another tank

they are in a twenty gallon right now. its a gorwth out tank. i have a 55 gallon coming next week. both the oscars and the convicts are under 2 inches

They should be fine for the time being (until the 55 gets set up)!!

caz,

You do realize that the 55 will be way to small for 2 oscars right?? Oscars are big messy fish and need at least 40 gallons for each one to live comfortably.

A 55 is really even to small for one adult oscar as the tank is usually only 13" wide and most oscars grow to a minimum of 12" (I have seen them at 16" in an aquarium). This barely leaves it enough room to turn around!!

You are also going to need very good filtration once your oscars start to grow. As I said they are very messy fish. They are prone to HITH disease and require excellant water quality.

I currently have 7 gold oscars that are 3.5" and are in a 120 gallon tank and I do water changes of 35% bi-weekly in their tank!!

Keep us posted please.

yes i know that oscars will grow up to be big and strong. i have a 3 year old oscar. hes about 8 inches right now. he has a 55 gallon to himself right now, and i am in the process of getting him atleast a 120. i live in a very rural area so my selection is very limited. i will definately get him a bigger tank though. but the only one within a 50 mile radius of me is over 900 dollars. i know that tanks are not cheap, but i would like to be able to pick up a used one without a stand. i wish to build my own stand. well anyways, by the time these oscars outgrow the 55 gallon, they will have a bigger tank to go to. thanx for the adivce :)

Cm i got told at this forum that 2 oscars would probably be the limit of a 50 gallon, whats the go?????????

Oscar,

Do you remember who might have said that?? Hope it wasn't me during one of my all night stupors

Seriously though, 50 gallons for two oscars just won't cut it given the fact that a 50 gallon is usually 36x18x18 breeder, or 48x13x20 standard!!

Keep in mind this is only my opinion, but does come from personal experiance of keeping oscars.

Sorry i dunno who it was. I do know that 50g is way to small for 2 oscars

I saw a breeding pair of tiger Oscars. they had to be 16 inches long though one was a bit smaller than the other. They were housed in about a 75 gallon tank with nothing but a thin piece of slate rock in the bottom of the tank, two fish and a rock. They looked way too big to be in that tank. Just my opinion.

As I am so fond on pointing out.....oscars CAN get to 16"!!!!

You are correct tho smudge..... a 75 is WAYYYYYYYYYYYY to small for a pair of adult oscars!!!

I am currently growing out 7 gold oscars and they are in a 120 gallon (6'x1.5'x20"). Once I get a pair out of the 7, I will be selling the rest.

By the way they are only 3.5" at the present time.

i have a four inch oscar, and two pink convicts in a grow out tank. i have reconsider my plans, and i dont think im going to be keeping the oscar, but man i would love to. i think once arond six inches im going to give him to a lfs. anyway, the convicts are about a inch and a half, and are breeding even, and dont seem to mess with the oscar too much. they stay in their area, and since the oscar is bigger than them theres not much problems. i would say though, in a 20 gallon, if the convicts breed ( which is imminent if there is a m/f combination) and the oscar is not much if at all bigger than the convicts, yuo might run into some problems. also, you said your 3 year old oscar is only 8 inches?? is it common for oscars to range in size from 8 to 16 inches!!? that is a huge range. i would assume the oscar is full grown at 3 years as well.

he hasnt grown much in a while, and yes he is 8 inches. i measured him not too long ago. could he possibly be full grown?

i wouldnt know for sure. my oscar has nearly doubled in size since i got him about 4 months ago. they usually are one of the fastest growing species, so i would assume he is full grown. i have never heard of a oscar that small though, that was full grown, but i can see it being possible.
