Hi guys

just a quick one hoping this might be a normal thing for them but not sure. Basically a few months ago we noticed our just fully grown oscar started acting a bit strange. all he was doing was flaring up his fins and opening his mouth wide. See below

Got told it may be a terretorial thing if we put anything near his tank that he's "claimed" for himself (been told oscars may claim space outside there tank??) or it could be a mating thing maybe if hes feeling a bit broody. By the way im saying he but we dont know the sex weve always just thought he was a boy in our minds lol

Anyway since a few months ago we havnt seen him do it again. Until tonight.....

Tonight he hit "stage 2" as im calling it. not only was he doing the same as last time, flaring fins wide open mouth etc he'd stepped it up a notch. He was rapidly shaking while advancing forward and attacking the glass. Theres a red tailed shark and a big common plec in there by the way but he wasnt even looking at them and hes lived in there with them for months and months so nothings changed there. All he was doing was shaking then attacking the glass a few times then was swimming in circles then back to the previous thing. was so weired to watch

Iv tried giving all info i can on this as the more info the better an explanation i may get last thing as well if this might help weve just recently taken a few of his tank mates out to put them in my new catfish tank iv got. there was 2 synodontis's (euptera and filamentosa) and a humbug catfish. This might not have anything to do with it but you never know it may help

Anyone got any ideas what he was doing. Please tell me this is normal comical oscar behaviour :)

He's totally normal now and acting fine but if he does it again il get a video to put up

tanks a 350l forgot to add that part

just got a video of him doing it not as bad attacking the glass as last night but you'll get the idea
just uploading it now

thanks its ok them sayin he will come to no harm but his lips are getting all bloody. will he attack another oscar if we introduce one then because we have a smaller oscar we are hoping to put in with him soon? thanks again we wont worry soo much now

anyone confirm if its a good idea or not to put another oscar in there soon as we have one in another tank were hoping to get him out of there

Does This only happen when someone's near the tank as it looks like its defending its tank from people

adding oscars to a tank with a Oscar that's already established its territory is very hit and miss I would try putting a divider in thetank to see what they do if one goes to attack the other through glass a lot then it's probably not gonna work out

Another way to do this is get a large storage box (clear) drill some holes in it for flow put it in the tank and add the second oscar into the storage box

My green terror used to do that, he stopped it after losing most of the tank territory though

Basically he is telling you that you dont own your house any more and should get out haha!! He is flaring at you - but rather worryingly... the shimmying you mentioned is breeding behavior lol.

  :hey:

as said your O is telling you its his tank. my O did this whenever my daughters or wife went near the tank which made me laugh as he didnt do it to me... probably because i was the one that fed him!

adding a smaller O isnt a great idea. your O is already showing you that its his tank so adding another, smaller weaker fish will end up in disaster in my eyes. also 350L is pushing it for 2 fully grown oscars, they need space as once they hit 12+ inches they are big powerfull fish. my huge oscar was in a 5x2x2 on his own and that seemed like the minimum tank size for him let alone 2 of them, unless you have a breeding pair.
