Ornament Turned my Pleco's Poo Blue!! :/

Hi there,

I've just recently encountered a minor issue which I thought I would try dropping by people here for any opinions.

I recently added a new small ornament to my fairly small tropical tank. This ornament is blue coloured and a couple of days after I had placed it in my tank I spotted that my single pleco appeared to be doing a poo which was partly blue coloured.

I've since removed the ornament responsible just to be on the safe side.

I've taken some pics on my phone of both the ornament.... and the poo!! ( ).

The ornament is by the Superfish brand which I know is a well known brand and appears to be produced by Aquadistri (China).

Does anyone have any opinion on whether or not the ornament being included in my tropical tank might pose any risk to my fish and the catfish?.

It is possible that he ate off a layer of the blue paint, and that’s why his poop is blue/green. But that really doesn’t explain why he has stringy poop.

I'm pretty sure most (if not all) plecos do nasty stringers like that.

Like PK said, he likely just sucked off a layer of the paint. Not sure if it's toxic, since I don't have artificial deco like that in my tanks... A little bit odd. If you're worried about it then I'd advise taking the ornament out.

Hm, never noticed mine doing that? He always just leaves little pellets, maybe 1cm long.

Yeah, pretty sure most do it... Regular colour, not white. Pretty healthy by the looks of it.

Poor thing. Unfortunately manufacturers and sellers sell many items that are unsafe or even deadly for fish. You have done the right thing by taking it out. Hopefully the pleco is ok.

He/She? seems to be getting on perfectly fine now and I haven't placed the ornament back in again.

Im not keen on using chemicals unless they are natural rather than processed.

The Pleco (as shown in my avatar pic!) however has definitely been doing long and stringy poo's ever since I did acquire him! (so I don't think there is any prob).
