I nearly ended up with water overfilling from my big tank yesterday. :(

My hubbie had done removed about 50 litres from the tank for me and then I put the HMA tubing from the filter into the tank and turned it on, it normally takes about a litre a minute to go through, so I reckoned on 45 to 50 minutes.

I then got busy helping my son with his homework from secondary school, next thing I looked up at the tank and it was full and when I lifted the lid up, the water was right at the top of the tank and would have overflowed if I'd left it another few minutes. Ooops.

My hubbie syphoned some water off into a bucket and got it to the right level for me.

But the moral of the story is:

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR TANK IF ITS BEING FILLED BY TUBE FROM A HMA OR RO FILTER.

I';ve nearly done that too. I use the hose off the bath shower thingy and then i can regulate the temp too. Got to the tank as it was withing half inch off the top....phewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. But I did have plugs in both sinks once,,one side had gravel cleaning and other side silk plants,,,left tap on and just went to do something, sat down and came on pc,,,next thing was about 20 mins later when I heard water,,,,my kitchen was flooded,i slopped my way over to the sink, it had all gone down the back and into cupboards and over everything, total night mare. So now i always make sure one of plugs is out in case I forget again.

What kind of system did you say you filled the tank with? I could really do with something like that...so could my back. All I have is a bucket and a jug. Tedious back breaking stuff!!!!

I've got a shower head on the bath tap. I take the shower hose off and screw on a hose connector then use the hose,,,saves lugging buckets of water......but don't forget to add conditioner to the tank while your doing it.

Im going to have to do that. Do you just put cold water in? Im forever making sure my water is about the same temperature of the tank. Ive got to get a gravel vac soon as well. My back is in ribbons!!!

I get the temp feeling about right first,,chill taken off the cold. Then i fold the hose to stop the flow,,,,,buttttttt,,,when u undo it make sure the end is in water properly, i've let go too soon quite often and its gone up the wall and over the floor.

Flooding the house is all part of keeping fish.

yup, real fishkeepers don't have carpets!!!

did it just this week, not the same but was cleaning the filter and for some reason i forgot to close off the in/out tubes just switched the filter off and took the lid of, predictably water just started siphoning out of the tank and onto the floor  :/

meh...... it happens!

Thats why i built a fish house, now i can throw water about to my hearts content.

I've overfilled my tanks too many times. Just last week I was filling my 80 and doing some pruning on my 29. Anyways, I quickly forgot about the tank filling up. And you can guess what happened next.

Im only twelve, and I have a 29 G Tank. I use a freaken bucket (2-1litres). >__> *takes at least an hour to fill it up.

Its been a year with this bucket, and I'm planning to buy a gravel cleaner/water thingy. :)

But yeah, thanks. Ill watch out if it overflows.

Its a HMA filter system, HMA stands for Heavy Metal Axe. It basically removes dirt down to say 1 or 5 Microns in one pod, then in a 2 pod system the 2nd pod removes all the heavy metals from the water, mine is a 3 pod system so it removes chlorine and chloramine too.

Its similar to a RO filter system, but it doesn't make the water as pure, it also doesn't produce waste water like RO does.

Ro-Man, Devotedly Discus and other places sell them or do as I did and get one off Ebay. I've seen them advertised on Aquarists Classified too.

My system is fastened on the wall, one of the tubes runs under my sink to a Y connector with an adapter on that the tubing connects to, I also have a ball valve on that tube so I can stop water getting into the system. I then have another piece of tubing running from the other end of the system, I've got this long enough so I can run it directly to both tanks, I've also got a ball valve on this tube too.

Hope that helps.

it is with an enormous amount of pleasure that i can say.. this is about the only thing i havent done. :D :p

blame your husband! if he started the job he should have been there to see it through... but its what becomes of us women being so good at multitasking- well, most of the time anyway
