It's not possible for them to breed...one's an egglayer, one's a Livebearer, plus they are totally different species and types. It's most likely a trait that showed up, then was selectively bred to continue to get that coloring and develop it.

Looks like my gold twin bar platy mixed with a pretty red platy or something. You notice in the pics that they show the yellowish color towards the top, with the two black bars on the tail. Here is a gold twin bar.

When i spoke to the guy at lps its a mix between:

A Tiger Barb + Platy mated

It got me thinking how and WOW

Ill add more pics for you guys!!!

H

actually what most likely happened was the gene that coded for the color on the tiger barb was extracted and then transferred to the platy embryo. It is quite nice, but I am jsut about done with livebearers, although i did love them.

It wouldn't be anything complicated like that :p Genetic engineering is expensive and time consuming. No one would develop something like that when the profit they'll get will never cover the costs.

It's also not a tiger barb hybrid! Breeding a platy to a barb is impossible. The genes are simply not compatible (not to mention the method of fertilisation).

All it is, like Anna said, is a mutation that cropped up - just like any other variety of platy. Think about it - when you look at a rainbow platy like this: http://www.tropicalfishintl.com/images/enl...ainbowPlaty.jpg , you don't think it's a platy x congo tetra - do you?
Congo BTW: http://www.lollygirl.com/images/congo_tetra.jpg

Simialrly, you don't think a siamese or hymalayan rat is a cross between a rat and a siamese cat :p

Aren't they both beauties?

completely possible, and I do agree Genetic Engineering is expensive.

lol Ya'lls explaination for this fish just got crazier and crazier..

It's just a mutation they continued in their breeding, thats all.

ive never seen a platy like that it is nice but something tells me its not natural

Lol, it doesn't look natural does it, but hay all good :) :) :)

I'm not sure if it has been Genetic engineered (speelin sorry)

But all he said to me was it was a mix between a Tiger Barb and a Platy!!!...So im unsure if it has been Genetic engineering or not???

H

It wasn't genetic engineering. Your LFS is retarded. (Sorry) Just because he says it is a cross between a platy and a tiger barb does NOT mean it is. He isn't the fish god. He has no idea what he is talking about, tiger barbs and platys aren't even in the same family.

This is what happened.
Some platy breeder somewhere in Alaska (or the moon) had one or two fry with this coloration, thought it was cool, and bred them, so the trait would be continued. There is no genetic engineering, and I even doubt dyeing. Platys are already too popular and brightly colored to waste their time/money dyeing them.

Hay Dakota Ice,

I posted pics on here for people to have a look and comment, but not such remarks as "Your LFS is retarded".

There is a saying which goes: "IF you keep you mouth shut, they will think your stupid, but if you open your mouth they will no you are stupid".

So thank you for your kind words, and missing the whole "OMG NEWS FLASH" which just ment i was exited and had been told WRONG by my lps i appologise....

Everybody else "game on" lol

Cheers H

I wasn't trying to be rude, and I'm not now, but please don't call me stupid when you don't have any idea what you're talking about. Just don't listen to your LFS ever again.
