I was looking in my tank this morning cause I had little white spots everywhere in the tank moving on the glass (dunno what they are, look like small snails to me) and I came across two of these small guppy looking fry that were clinging to the glass. I thought they were dead until a fish came by and one zipped off one direction and the other moved further up the glass. I managed to get a couple of pics, but it is so tiny.
Could they be baby Otos!? As I only had two in my tank (1 for 3 years and the other for 5 months).I know the Pleco couldn't have given birth because we had it seperate from a male for 8 months. I checked if I had more, but my tank is full of plants.

well they are certainly the right shape/size to be baby otos-even if the photos are not too clear. it is not unheard of to have otos breed, but it is quite unusual. ive got a very very gravid female and am anxiously waiting for her to lay her eggs(even if the male doesnt fertilize them-ill be psyched!).
so CONGRATS ON THE FRY!!! im jealous :)
keep us posted on how they are doing.
cheers

Lol I know. I was psyched when I saw them and thought they were baby guppies, but was like "wait I don't have gupies anymore since last month and they never were in the bigger tank". I was watching my tank again and I saw 2 more clinging onto the rocks. I tried getting more pics, but all you see is blurry dots. I want to catch them and put them in a smaller 10gal tank to stay away from the other fish, but as soon as I tried to get one, it zipped away. OMG I am so happy! I thought I saw the 6 month Oto Nova alittle bigger than normal. Also Charger was always around her so I guess it was a match. :hyper:

Also good luck on yours.

yes-
i am very excited. my female began getting fat around christmas. now she is FULL of yellow eggs(i can actually see them thru her skin) and is very fat! the male chases her around (and they are always together) so finger doubly crossed.
my tank is a 6 gal very heavily planted with plenty of algae for the otos. there also are some little crawly critters (insuforia) in there for the fry once/IF the eggs are laid and fertilized and the fry are looking for food :)
please keep this thread updated. once/IF my female lays i will start a thread too. hopefully it will be soon (im watching that tank like a HAWK :)
cheers

Awesome! Hope you get them soon! It took mine not even a month in the 45g. I had them in a 30g and my Oto Hemi died just before Christmas,so we got another Oto Nova, and got the 45g about 3 weeks ago and Bam! Keep your fingers crossed. That would be great!

lol I showed one of my LFS and all 3 people were like WAH!? and were asking me lots of questions about my PH, chemical balance, etc. I was like I don't check those and have never in the last 5 years. I just add Aquaclear to the water (for chlorine) and clean the tank every couple of weeks. Feed 2 times a day with a varity of foods (sometimes once a week I don't feed for a day), keep my temp at a steady 78-82 F. That's about it lol.

O. The male Oto Charger passed away. I found him floating in the floating plants when I was looking in the tank. RIP Charger May 2007- March 2010.

I used to have Ottos and although I never was able to have them breed, I really wish I experienced this kind of thing. It looks like you might have some little Ottos crawling around sometime soon!

This is a quite rare occurrence and I do feel that your should catalogue you success by taking as many water parameters as humanly possible not just the usual suspects. Also temp, lighting and the overall biotope your keeping them in. weekly maintenance etc.
Breeding accounts of Otto's are sparse around the net and the more published the better IMO. By cataloguing all the data also means you can replicate your efforts time and time again.

Yea I was planning on seeing what my water parameters at my LFS and one person wants to come over and check things out. Today I didn't see any fry, but I am hoping at least one makes it. I have Danios that zip everywhere and have an internal Fluval filter. I am trying to add more plants in there too to give alittle more cover and so the Danios have to swim alittle slower. Also will be going ot the pet store sometime this week to get another Oto...hopefully another male, becasue my female is small again but getting a belly.

It'll be cool having tiny oto fry

There was a very nice thread with pictures posted by a member here a wee while back re his/her otos breeding. Take a look :)
