Hi

I'm not having much luck with the cories i have been getting lately, they start by dashing up and down to the surface, then hide away, my albino cory looks the worse you can't see him breathing but still rolls his eyes at me and does occasionally move from his spot.

I have a 60 litre hexangle tank with 2 platies (fine) 4 white cloud mountain minnows (fine) 1 female swordtail, 1 male betta and 3 cory catfish pepper, albino and bronze.

Heres there symptoms:

> red streaks at the base of the fins
> listness
> dash from the surface
> hid in flowerpots
> gills look swollen than normal

I tested the water chemistry and it's zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate is 5mg same as tap water, ph is 7.6 the tank has been running for 3 months

In that time i have had 2 cories die on me, so what am i doing wrong, feel like giving up.

I done a gravel clean and it was dirtier than i thought. Do a gravel clean every week.

Are the cory's suffering from an internal infection or gill flukes?

Someone help please

Bigfish, Hi sorry to hear about your trouble, i have been searching for you to see if we can figure this out. Here is a link to diseases of fish, it is pretty sad to look at so please be prepared.

Here is another link dealing with cory diseases. I really hope we can figure this out.

Keep us updated on what it is, and how they are.

The red streaks sound to me like bacterial septecimia. Its diicult to treat but I believe its du to a build up of bactreia in the tank and as your cory's are rooting in the gravel all the time they are most likely to be affected by a bacteria build up there while the rest of your fish wont.
Lots of clean water and sparkling gravel will help but it takes a few weeks to recover...

Since you have swordtails and platies, have you added any salt to the water? Cories don't like that. I have no idea what symptoms they would show in that case and therefore don't know if what you describe could be caused by salt. Thought I'd mention it anyway, just in case.

Well it's hard to beleve this but they are back to there normal cheeky selfs, so i guess the gravel was a problem, i guess i was feeding them too many algae wafers!!! :*) and most of it was going un eatened,

Yay my cories are gonna survive :p :D

Thanks for all your help.

I will keep ya posted

Bigfish,
So glad to hear they are better today. I usually vaccuum my gravel every 3 to 4 days, to remove any yuck. I do half a tank at a time and then do the other half the next cleaning. I may be doing it too much, but theya re all happy in there. Just remember that your good guys live in the gravel too, so dont clean it too well. LOL Good luck and keep us posted on your corys.

Hi bigfish.

I'm glad that your corys are back to normal. Just be sure that cleaning the bottom of the tank becomes part of your normal routine to keep them healthy and happy.

But I'd like to address some of the things you mentioned in your earlier post. First, corys sometimes shoot up to the surface and come back down; they also like to hide in caves which is why you put in the flowerpots. This is normal behavior so don't worry about it. Also, it's not easy to tell if a cory is listless or not since they will often sit still for extended periods of time.

That leaves the other two symptoms you mentioned: red streaks at the base of the fins and swollen gills. These are bad signs and need to be dealt with if they are still present, even if your fish are active, because Billy may have left a bacterial infection in your tank even though he is gone.

Please go to a lfs whose proprietor you trust and talk to him about these problems if they continue to exist. He can suggest a preparation to sterilize you tank if necessary.
