Oh My God!

i had some one look after my tanks over christmas as i was away for 9 days they were going to go round evey 3 days to feed them. i just got a phone call to say they went round on tuesday and everything was fine but went round today and eveything is dead because the electric had run out(which i had given the money to top up)im not angry or upset just gutted. they offered me some money but i told them its not as easy as just going out and buying some more fish!

so 3 days without electric obviously cooled the water which killed the fish, but what about the filters? the electric has been turned on now by them but they wont fish out the dead ones and im not back till sun/ mon

will i have to re cycle my tanks or should the bactiria have survived

heres what i lost...

350l 2x angelfish 2x rams 2x silver dollar 1x clown loach 1x female betta 1x sailfin syno 1x opline gourmi 1x otto 1x flying fox 4x bosemani rainbow 7x columbian tetra

65l 3x platies 5x kuhli loaches 5x endlers 1x male krib

Sorry to hear about your loss :C. This happened to me once before where the electricity in my apartment went out for a few days and i lost all my fishes.

hmmm its likly one to two of the fish died, this would have caused an high ammonia spike and without the filters i guess it was too much, im still suprised they all died, three days isnt that long and tanks take ages to cool down, i would be very annoyed. Anyway, id clear out the fish and then do a 50% water change and then test to see where you are, i would have thought some bacteria would have survived and with the dead fish there is loads to feed it so you might be able to re stock straight away, im so sorry this is awful and quite surprising, di

Aww hun i'm so sorry to hear of your loss,you must be heartbroken :hugs:

I suppose in theory if the electric is back on and the filters are running,with all the dead bodies in the tank,they may keep the filters ticking over,producing ammonia themselves by decomposing...

But like you say,its not a case of just going out and buying more,especially has you got your stock established.

I'm sorry! That's horrible! Your filters should be fine. The dead fish will create ammonia, which should feed the filters.

That sucks sorry for your loses. Like others have said seeing how there dead they will start to release ammonia and should be plenty to keep the bacteria alive.

dude that would be a worst nightmare..i don't cry much rarely only when a family member dies or things along that line..but that would have me on my knees ,i am so sorry if i lived close like in your country i would totally donate some fish to you and media if you needed it.

Ok i got home today took some of the dead fish out of the 350ltank and tested the water using an api kit

ammonia 2-4ppm
nitrite0.25ppm
nitrate 80 prob higher

65l tank dead fish still in there
ammonia 0ppm
nitrite oppm
nitrate 20-40

what should i do now?
there are obviously no fish in there i just want to try and save the filters from having to be cycled again.
the small tank seems to be ok and te bactiria must still be alive? but i wonder are the readings from the big tank so high because of the volume of dead fish that were in there?

one more thing, four apple snails i have in there are still alive and all over the dead fish feasting!what should i do with them?

I cant help you on everything but Ill suggest some things. First off it sounds like you small tank theres no fish and you big tank there is? If this is right take your filter from the small tank put it on the big tank it will keep the bacteria alive and hel get rid of the ammonia. Then I would do a 90 percent water change to bring down the ammonia. Not sure what to do with the snails. You could put them in the small one with a heater for now.
