okay so,

today i brought marks 5x2x2ft tank.

brought it home filled it up with water and now i got the problem of deciding hat to put in it.

what would you guys recommend for such a tank ?

i seen Fire eels at my LFS they are only small about 6inches and wondered if one would be fine in this ?

with maybe a few other freinds that you guys recommend for company ?

There is masses of choice, have a look and see what type of fish you like, we cant exactly pick your tanks stock for you...Once you have a short list then you can ask for recomedations on compatibility etc

yeah but surely certain ones need bigger tanks ?

Yes a Great White would need a huge tank but show some common sense ;)

Have a look at what YOU like as its YOUR tank and then you can ask for opinions etc afterwards, this thread is similar to me asking you to pick me a car and you not knowing anything about me, my likes, dislikes etc :)

A fire eel will be ok as they are slow growing. As for odd balls you can house birchirs, tigers (datanoids), some largish catfish sorubim lima ornate pim, that should get you started.

There's an endless list m8! I'd say a fire eel, BGK, a bichir (armored may be) and some halfbeaks or ABFs.

You have alot of options for a tank of this size. For the top you could go for red tailed chalcus (sp?) or silver needle fish (see fish index) aswell are pikes (see fish index) and other things that may be good for the top and just generally arround the tank. For the middle you could go for siamese tiger fish, like mentioned (see fish index), but there are other options like orcars and things may crop up that may fit the bill. For the bottom you could have bichirs (see fish index), catfish (like blochii pims, ornate pims, lima shovelnoses, trachy trachys, fowleris and their cousins) and often fish will crop up that may be suitable at the LFS, just check planetcatfish or fishbase first. The other thing you could do is use it for a growout if you are going to go bigger within a year or two. Then you can think about much bigger (well, smaller for now) fish, like aros, clown knifes, pbass etc etc.
I wouldnt put a fire eel in a tank of that size. Remember CFCs which grew to something like 30" or maybe a little bigger...See the fish index too.

yeah they can get that big but they are real slow growers and you wont have any trouble selling it on if it does get to big.

Hmm I wouldnt be so sure TBH...Theyre popular fish and all, but its when they get to the sizes that they do that people start not wanting them...I contemplated it but is it worth the hassel, even if it will take a couple of years...? Im not sure.

well you bought your tank today, while its good to think of what to stock it with, you'd have to cycle your tank first. i'd go with the fire eel. a 5 foot would suffice. they wont get that big in captivity as compared to the wild.

No it wont get as big as in the wild, but it will get to 24", and could, over time get to 30". They really are huge fish, and not just their comfort, but also the waste they produce would be quite dangerous in a 150g when its large...But at the end of the day, it is your tank and if youre set on it then go for it, Im just outlining the possible dangers is all.

Well my fire eel was housed in the tank he has bought as he bought the tank from me and ive upgraded no one knows what the future holds and dont worry if you do want one IF it does become to big I will buy it from you if you struggle to move it on how about that for a deal.

you are a true gent and to be honest if it did get to big i'd give it you just for the simple fact that you are a great guy :D

i would really like one but i've gotta move my current fish into the tank this weekend along with the filters and stuff because i have to vacate my old room :(

so not sure if one would eat my tetras n what not even tho the are relatively small but we'll see :D

Oddballs are what i want but i will be going on holiday at the end of sept and don't wanna rush into things but thanks for the advice :D
