Morning all.

Just gotten up and had a look into my nano tank, housing one male Betta and noticed he's got some odd discolouration on his head, just above his mouth. I tried to get a picture but my camera is absolutely useless. I've looked it up as best as I can and it looks like Ick, but I'm still not sure as his behaviour hasn't changed at all. He still comes swimming to the front of the tank to greet me when I'm near, still very active and no fin damage.

Water parameters are
Size - 22L
Temp - 78°F
Ammonia - 0ppm
Nitrites - 0ppm
Nitrates - ~0ppm

I'm very worried about him. The only change that's happened in the tank recently is a new brand of frozen live food - could that be the cause if it is ick?

Thanks
Charley

Can you describe what the discolouration looks like more please? How large of an area is discoloured and is it swollen or raised at all? Also it seems unusual for a cycled tank to have no nitrates, what kind of test kit are you using (strips, liquid) and how long has the tank been set up? Also have you added anything recently apart from the new food? Plants, ornaments or anything like that?

Also have a really good look at him, pay attention to the gills, thats where ich, if thats what this is like to hide out normally.

Hi Neon

The day after I posted this the one tiny white spot had gone, and has not come back at all. His gills are fine and his behaviour hasn't changed at all. I think the tiny white spot I saw may have in fact been a flek of flake food or something like that as when I looked in on him a few hours later it seemed to be in a different place. All fine now though so panic over!

As for the nitrates being 0 (or there abouts), I think this is because of the huge anubia I have in the tank. I do weekly water changes and regularly test the water parameters to make sure all is OK. Tank is most definitely cycled as I followed the fishless cycling method when I set it up about 4 or 5 months ago now. No new plants or ornaments recently, just the food. I've continued to keep a close eye on him for any signs of ick or anything else, but it's been clear for days.

Thanks for your reply.
