What size of tank do you have, what stock level and how heavily planted is it?

Oops, its a juwel Rio 180 not set up yet, I will be adding a few plants
Not fully planted

personally I would look for a Fluval 405, I have one of those and a eagle aquatic hw-304 running on my RIO 400 and looking at a powerhead to get things moving a bit more.

Better to have too much and turn the filter down than not enough

Do you rum both at the same time ? I looked at power head so I may as well ask what its about? So some info would be good

Yea I run both at the same time, but my tank is over twice the size. You should be able to get away with one, but look at something rated more 1200 l/hour most ratings are with-out media so you actually achieve much less, so aim for 8-10x times turnover (mine works out at 8.25, but the drop off on the HW-304 is pretty bad hence looking at a powerhead)on rating and you should be hunky dory.

A powerhead is a pump that moves the water around, some filters have them built-in while others are a separate unit. If your circulation is not good enough but your filter can handle the biomass then they are pretty handy.

I have my 305 running now and have read a few post off peeps asking about sand, some say leave it to clear before turning the filter on
well i filled my tank and filter went straight on

though the sand was washed well and my water was not cloudy
when i do the maintenance on the filter can the impeller be removed to clear ant sand if there is any in there
any advice on maintenance you have would be good

cheers

you can remove the lid to the impeller compartment and you can remove the impeller itself along with the ceramic stick it sits on. A cotton bud did the trick when trying to get the gunk out. That said, you shouldnt have to clean the impeller compartment for a good 6-8 months, best to let it run naturally as they often get noisey when played around with.
