i was planning on buying a 40 gallon without a hood, i was wondering how i would set up a light and suspend it over the tank. is this possible? thx for all the info.

I've seen suspended lighting systems on ebay, but nowhere else

A lot of people have open topped tanks. Reef tanks for example are frequently open topped with lighting suspended. People who grow plants which extend above the water often do the same.

A lot depends why you want to do it. The type of lights required for these two scenarios for example, is quite different.

Things to remember with open topped tanks include the fact that a lot of fish jump, and you risk loosing fish that way. Evaporation is usually higher. Dust and other airborne contaminants get into the tank more easily.

My 10 gallon doesn't have a top, and I have my light suspended a foot or so above the tank. The plants are doing so well with the 60+ watts.

i said no hood, not no lid lol. i was planning on keeping some sort of lid over the tank. im just trying to get the cost down to a reasonible price for me. thx.
