With fish in the tank, perhaps twice daily water changes will be needed. Reducing feeding's can also help.
Process for developing the bacteria to convert ammonia and nitrites to less harmful nitrAtes, can take four to eight weeks.
If you can lay your hands on some filter material from a friends tank and keep it wet while transferring it to your tank,,this would speed the process.
Is important to keep borrowed filter material wet in aquarium water (not tapwater) and transfer the material as quickly as you can (within hours).
Otherwise,, Water changes and more water changes.

As said above, if you can get someone to give you some mature filter media you'll be laughing (try asking your lfs for some) but if thats not an option, just keep up on water changes. But usually after a big nitrite spike, things should start to level out.
