Either a properly cycled tank or regular water changes with fresh, warm, de-chlorinated water.

It depends on how quickly the fish are producing ammonia and it being turned into nitrite, and how big your water changes are.

If you are in a situation where you have anything other than 0ppm nitrite showing on a test, you need to be testing the water daily, and changing water if you are showing any nitrite. You should only stop daily testing once you've gone a week without having to change water.

Nitrite attaches itself to the haemoglobin in the bloodstream, thus preventing oxygen from doing so. The fish feel like they are being suffocated.

The only thing that can depict when to do your water changes is your test results. If you are showing that much NitrIte, then i would advise AT LEAST a 50% water change every day. But remember, if it's reading 0.5ppm, then a 50% will only get it down to 0.25ppm. Without wanting to sound rude, but are you aware of the 'nitrogen cycle' and how important it is to our tank and it's inhabitants?

You'll harm your fish more by leaving them in water with high nitrite levels than by changing water every day. A water change will not harm your fish.

If you have ANY nitrite showing it is too much. You need to be doing 90% water changes, not 50%.

That's good. Remember to keep testing, to make sure the bacteria are still coping with the load - you may find you need another change.

No "might" about it. You DO need to do a water change again, if your nitrite is back at 0.25.
