Do nitrite snails bury themselves on purpose?   I got 2 of these yesterday, one was pretty good sized. I have not seen him since last night.  One was teeny tiny. I see him but he is pretty much buried in the sand next to the glass. Is this normal? Or do I need to get him out of there asap?

Mine do that occasionally, also. Not completely buried, but most of the way.

I'm no expert, but I don't think it is a problem.

I had a load of Malaysian Trumpet Snails in my last tank and I remember that during the day almost all of them would hide under rocks or in the substrate and I thought they had all died. I then came back really late one night to see my glass covered with the guys, (they feed at night I think). Also did you mean Nerite Snails instead of Nitrite? Because I kept them and they also had a habit of hiding in the day and coming out at night.

I read somewhere that MTS bury themselves in the substrate which helps to aerate it.

This is my experience, Cameron

I have never kept Nerite snails but if you can follow this link it has some helpful information

Yes, I meant Nerite LOL  Can you all tell I am hung up on my 10 gallon cycle?  LOL

The little guy crawled out of the sand now.  I thought he had been buried by a cory at first .  They were pushing him around when he got in the tank

Sometimes my nerites hang around just under the rim of the tank. Hard to find them then sometimes. Lol. If they stay up there all the time though then something could be bothering them, whether it be something in the water or pests. And also, dont worry if they sit in one spot for a couple days or so. They like to go dormant some and then will move around. My horned nerites are cool. Lol.

I finally did find the larger black one up under the rim of the tank.   I don't figure anything is bothering it. I guess that is just where it wanted to be. I have 2 apple snails and they are all over the tank all the time. So this behavior from these 2 snails was not was what I used to. LOL

Glad you found it! Mine to all over the place above and below water. They crawl on the heater and filter intake. I find them hanging upside down from stuff munching away. Just if you see them laying on their back, be sure to turn them over! They can't upright themselves like some other snails.
