My question is regarding nitrite levels on a new tank set-up. I have had my 55 gallon set up for around 4 weeks now. I just checked my ammonia levels (measured 0 ). My nitrite levels are off the charts. My question is how long will the nitrite levels stay high until they fall. And I just did a 25 percent water change because I don't want my fish to be too stressed out. Would it be okay to do a 25 percent water change every day until my nitrite levels fall or will that slow down the cycling process. I did do a water change almost every day while my ammonia was high. Is 25 % too much? Any help regarding the point at which I am at in my cycling process would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Christine

Im no expert on the nitrogen cycle but did i understand you right you have fish in the tank already? Exposure to levels of nitrite that high, even for a short while will seriously damage their health.I would seriously think about asking your lfs if they could put your fish up for a while (most will do this for a small fee)and return them alive and well once the nitrites have dispersed.

The nitrite levels should lower in just over a week. Carry on with the water changes - it will lengthen the process but keep your fish alive. I did the same once when I was given fish for my new tank before it cycled. The fish survived and bred during the cycle
