he best way is to do water changes, not frequent small ones, but like a really big one. Melev has a page that talks about how he got rid of nitrates.

how long has the tank been set up?

Also, be careful doing a really big water change, as you don't want to re-start your cycle.

how would it do that? ive done plenty of big water changes (50%) on my 20 gallon with the exact opposite, it helps my water quality lol.

I just wasn't sure what you meant by "a really big one" lol

i don't think i'd do much more than 50% and only when absolutely necessary. When you replace the water that has all the proper amounts of bacteria and things in the water and you remove a majority of that and add in water that is clean, then your tank will have to adjust to that and regain the proper amounts of "stuff"
